Cells, Cells, Cells….energy processes
Photosynthesis and Respiration
Cell – the smallest part of any living organism



A group of cells make a tissue
A group of tissues make an organ
A group of organs makes an organ system
Main differences between plant and animal cells are:
 Plants: definite shape; rectangular…..caused by the cell wall
 Plants: produce their own food….caused by the chloroplast

Animal cells have no definite shape and do not produce food
Photosynthesis:
The process of the plants making their own food using sunlight (light
energy), carbon dioxide and water……….also using chlorophyll

Chlorophyll energy
a green chemical inside the chloroplast that traps light
Chemical equation for photosynthesis:
CO2
C6H12O6 + O2
(carbon dioxide) (water)
+
(produces)
H2O
(glucose)
Materials

Glucose – natural sugar (food for the plant)
(oxygen)
Products

Chemical equation in words:
Carbon dioxide plus water, in the presence of sunlight, produces glucose
and oxygen.
This all takes place in the chloroplast of a plant cell!!!
Cellular (aerobic) Respiration
Cellular respiration – a process in the mitochondria where the cell produces
energy that is released
Materials:
Products:
glucose
carbon dioxide
oxygen
water
energy
Chemical equation for respiration:
