PART 1: POSTER
Research your constellation and create a poster. The poster must be at least 12 x 18 inches.
Your poster must include the following essential elements:
A. The name of your constellation as well as the nickname.
B. The myth about the constellation. The story or stories from different peoples, written in
your own words.
C. At least one (you may use more) diagram of your constellation. Label the major stars and
provide lines to show the “shape” and/or outline of the constellation. You may draw or sketch
the diagram. You can use additional pictures of your constellation, but at least one must be
your sketch.
D. Provide a list of the major stars in your constellation. Research each to find the information
to complete the chart. You must include at least 3 stars and no more than 5 stars (see
“research tips” page for assistance with completing the chart). This chart must be included on
your poster somewhere. You may rewrite it.

E. Three fascinating facts about your constellation written in complete sentences (examples:
where can your constellation be seen from? Where is it located? Does it point to other
constellations or stars or planets? Describe the Deep Sky Objects like clusters or galaxies
present.) You may include fascinating facts about the STARS in your constellation if you
prefer.
F. What are the celestial coordinates of your constellation? Find the right ascension and
declination coordinates for the brightest star(alpha) in your constellation.
G. Attach a separate sheet of three references you used. If it is a website, provide
the title and URL. If it is a book, include the title, author, and pages used.

1) You need to look up the stars in your constellation. Look up the list of constellations at the
University of Wisconsin –Madison astronomy website or on Wikipedia for a list of stars.

2) Determine the spectral type for each star. Check two different websites. The first is U of WMadison’s again

OR the University of Illinois’ website.

3) Look at the spectral type to determine the temperature, color and type of star. The Roman numeral
in the spectral type tells us the star type and the letter tell us the color and temperature. Use the
tables below and see the example above.

4) Finally, for the distance from the earth, look on Wikipedia.com On the right hand side of the page,
you will see a chart. Under the heading “astronomy”, you will see a listing for “distance”. It is given in
light years.
