NC Geography Vocabulary
You will make V3 Charts for your vocabulary. Make sure you write the title " NC Geography
Vocabularyā€¯ at the top of your page. These vocabulary charts should be written on notebook paper
that you will turn in. Use the example below to help you.
Format:

Definition
Use the word correctly in a sentence and underline it OR draw a picture that represents the
word.
Example:
Tidewater Region
The region of the state that lies along the
Atlantic Ocean; sometimes called the "outer
coastal plain".
The Tidewater Region is the only place where the Venus Flytrap grows naturally.
1. Tidewater Region - the region of the state that lies along the Atlantic Ocean; sometimes called the
"outer coastal plain."
2. sound - inland body of mixed water found through much of the Tidewater region.
3. barrier island - a long chain of islands or sand pits along the state coastline.
4. Outer Banks - the most famous barrier island in NC along the northern half of the coastline.
5. inlets - a break in the barrier islands that allows seawater to come in and out with the tides.
6. Gulf Stream - the ocean current that runs northwards along the NC coast; it carries warm water from
the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic.
7. wetland - soil that is soaked or flooded with water most of the year.
8. estuary - the part of a river where it meets the sea; where fresh and salt water mix.
9. pocosin - "swamp on a hill"; a peat swamp that fills with water when the water table is high.
10. savanna - a flat grassland with some scattered trees.
11. Coastal Plain Region - the part of NC that lies between the Tidewater and the Piedmont.
12. crossroads hamlets - small towns that provided goods and services to nearby farmers.
13. tobacco town - a town whose activities focused around the raising of tobacco.
14. Carolina Bays - elongated depressions in the ground found in the Coastal Plain.
15. sandhills - concentrations of rolling sand ridges northwest of the Carolina Bays.
16. Piedmont Region - the part of NC that lies between the Coastal Plains and Mountain regions.
17. fall line - an imaginary line that extends from near Roanoke Rapids southwest past Raleigh and
Fayetteville.
18. headwaters - the source or spring from which a river first flows.
19. mill village - a cluster of housing near a factory that was owned by the company, which also
provided stores and schools.
20. monadnock - a geological condition where a point of land stands out because all around it the land
has been eroded.
21. Mountain Region - the part of NC that lies between the Piedmont Region and the State of
Tennessee.
22. elevation - the height above sea level.
23. bald - a mountain area usually above 6,000 feet in elevation where few trees grow.
24. cove - a valley where streams cut out swathes wide enough for farming.
