Chapter 3 – Cell Division - Vocabulary List
DNA – The genetic material found in all living cells that contains the information
needed for an organism to grow, maintain itself, and reproduce
chromosome – a structure formed when the DNA in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell
condenses before the cell divides
cell cycle – the normal sequence of growth, maintenance, and division in a cell
interphase – the period in the cell cycle in which a cell grows, maintains itself, and
prepares for division
mitosis – the phase in the cell cycle during which the nucleus divides
cytokinesis – the division of a parent cell’s cytoplasm following mitosis
asexual reproduction – the process by which a single organism produces offspring
that have the same genetic material
binary fission – a form of asexual reproduction by which some single-celled
organisms reproduce
regeneration – in some organisms, the process by which certain cells reproduce new
tissue growth at the site of a wound or lost limb
PMAT
1. prophase – chromosomes condense, nuclear membrane disappears
2. metaphase – chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. (m=m)
3. anaphase – chromosomes split into two separate chromosomes (get pulled
apart, a=a)
4. telophase – nuclei form, new membrane forms around chromosomes
5. cytokinesis– the division of a parent cell’s cytoplasm following mitosis
