Biology 12: Urinary System and Excretion Review Questions Sheet 1 Name Class Date 1. Define Excretion. 2. List the 4 organs/body parts that make up your excretory system. 3. What substances does the excretory system control to maintain your body at homeostasis? (In other words, List the 4 main functions of your urinary system.) 4. Using the words outer, middle and inner tell where the cortex, medulla and pelvis are located inside of a kidney. 5. What jobs are performed by the renal arteries and renal veins? 6. Which main blood vessel supplies blood to the renal arteries? 7. Which main blood vessel collects blood from the renal veins? 8. What is the glomerulus and what part of the nephron does it deliver blood to? 9. Name and explain briefly what happens during the 3 stages of urine formation. Biology 12: Urinary System and Excretion Review Questions Sheet 1 10. Define Excretion. The processes the body uses to clean the blood and remove the waste from the body. 11. List the 4 organs/body parts that make up your excretory system. Skin – waste as sweat Lungs – water, ammonia and carbon dioxide Liver – poisons from the blood which have been made less poisonous Urinary System – cleans “waste” from the blood and removes it from the body as urine 12. What substances does the excretory system control to maintain your body at homeostasis? (In other words, List the 4 main functions of your urinary system.) Acid and Base Balance (secretion and excretion of H+) Salt and Water balance Excretes urine, which contains metabolic wastes products, out of the body Secretes hormones 13. Using the words outer, middle and inner tell where the cortex, medulla and pelvis are located inside of a kidney. Outer – renal cortex Middle – renal medulla Inner – renal pelvis 14. What jobs are performed by the renal arteries and renal veins? Renal arteries takes oxygenated blood into the kidney (glomerulus) Renal veins take oxygenated blood out of the kidney (nephron) 15. Which main blood vessel supplies blood to the renal arteries? Aorta 16. Which main blood vessel collects blood from the renal veins? Inferior vena cava 17. What is the glomerulus and what part of the nephron does it deliver blood to? The glomerulus is the name for each of the millions of capillaries packed into a bulbous unit in the kidneys. It delivers blood to the bowman’s capsule. 18. Name and explain briefly what happens during the 3 stages of urine formation. Filtration – waste leaves blood at the glomerulus and enters the nephron at the bowman’s capsule Reabsorption – the body recovers substasnces it needs back from the filtrate inside the nephron Secretion/Excretion – the last chance for the blood to lose waste to the nephron
