CMS The Movie – (7 min version) text of soundtrack ----------------------------------
00:20 The CMS experiment is located near the village of Cessy, in France, about 15km from the Geneva airport.
00:36 The complete detector will be assembled and tested in a surface hall over a period of about 4 years, starting in 2000.
01:08 The assembly starts with the construction of a so-called "Ferris wheel" structure, used to build the steel rings that form the
skeleton of the 12500 tonne detector.
01:56 Each ring has a diameter of 15m and is made of three concentric steel layers that will at the same time support the internal
detectors and act as a return yoke for the magnet.
02:16 When a ring is assembled it is realeased from the Ferris wheel and moved further away into the hall sliding on air cushions
mounted under the supporting feet.
02:38 At a later stage, muon chambers will be inserted between the ring's layers. There are five of these rings, that support the
central part of CMS - called the "barrel".
02:54 The central ring has a special role, as it supports the solenoid magnet and all of the barrel detectors.
03:02 This includes the Hadron Calorimeter, known as "HCAL", seen here being constructed in wedges. These are made from
brass, interleaved with plastic scintillators.
03:16 Before inserting the HCAL we will construct the solenoid magnet and put it in place. The solenoid magnet is made of five
cylindrical sections, which are enclosed within outer and inner vacuum tanks. The magnetic field supplied by the solenoid is 4
Tesla, about 100000 times that of the earth.
03:50 At this point the HCAL is inserted into the solenoid, and will be followed by the electromagnetic calorimeter and the inner
tracker.
04:00 The CMS detector is completed by two "endcaps", which contain muon chambers and also support calorimeters.
04:35 Each endcap is made of three layers of steel that form the endcap return yoke similar to the barrel, assembled in wedges.
4:53 The layers are joined together, separated by steel rings. 5:05 The front layer supports the endcap calorimeters.
5:30 The endcap hadron calorimeter is assembled in wedges on a circular support plate. Its structure is similar to that of the barrel
HCAL.
5:45 The endcap HCAL is rotated and lifted into position on the front layer of the return yoke. This will be followed by the addition of
the endcap electromagnetic calorimeter in front of the HCAL and the insertion of muon chambers between the steel layers.
6:16 The five barrel rings and the two endcaps fit together to form the Compact Muon Solenoid, which will be later lowered in
segments into the underground experimental cavern.
