Glossary Compound Machine: The combination of two or more simple machines. (Page 1) Efficiency: The work done by a machine divided by the work put into a machine, shows how well a machine does work. (Page 2) Inclined Plane: An even, sloped surface. (Page 6) Joules: The measure and unit for work. (Page 10) Lever: A bar that rotates around a fixed point. (Page 8) Machine: A device that makes work easier, and changes the size and/or direction of the force. (Page 1) Mechanical Advantage: the advantage gained by using a machine in transferring force. (Page 2) Power: The rate at which work is done. (Page 10) Pulley: A grooved wheel that turns freely in its frame, which is called a block. (Page 7) Screw: An inclined plane wound around a central cylinder. (Page 9) Watts: The measure and unit for power. (Page 10) Wedge: A modified inclined plane that separates or holds force. (Page 1) Wheel and Axle: A wheel connected to a main body, sometimes with other wheels. (Page 4) Work: Force and Motion in a direction. (Page 10) Work Input: Work done on a machine.
