Glossary
Compound Machine: The combination of two or more simple machines. (Page 1)
Efficiency: The work done by a machine divided by the work put into a machine, shows how
well a machine does work. (Page 2)
Inclined Plane: An even, sloped surface. (Page 6)
Joules: The measure and unit for work. (Page 10)
Lever: A bar that rotates around a fixed point. (Page 8)
Machine: A device that makes work easier, and changes the size and/or direction of the force.

Mechanical Advantage: the advantage gained by using a machine in transferring force. (Page 2)
Power: The rate at which work is done. (Page 10)
Pulley: A grooved wheel that turns freely in its frame, which is called a block. (Page 7)

Watts: The measure and unit for power. (Page 10)
Wedge: A modified inclined plane that separates or holds force. (Page 1)
Wheel and Axle: A wheel connected to a main body, sometimes with other wheels. (Page 4)
