Tab 2: Solving Equations
To solve an equation means to find the value of the variable
The Goal of every equation is to get the variable by itself on one side of the equal sign
(The Cheese Stands Alone!)
The Method of this goal is called inverse (opposite) operations
Inverse of add is subtract, inverse of subtract is add, inverse of times is divide, inverse of
divide is times.
If you see add, subtract. If you see subtract, add. If you see times, divide. If you see
divide, times.
Example:
Solve x + 7 = 10.
x + 7 = 10
x + 7 = 10
-7 = -7
x + 7 = 10
-7 =-7
x
= 3
The solution is 3.
Write the equation.
Subtract 7 from each side. What you do on one side of the equals,
you have to do on the other
Simplify.
