Living Things: Classification, Needs, & Genetics
Genetics
Needs of Living Things
Define the following words:
Explain why living things need
the following items.
Genotype: an organism’s genetic makeup
or allele combinations
T - Temperature
Phenotype: an organism’s physical
appearance or visible traits
O – oxygen
Dominant: an allele whose trait always
shows up when the allele is present
W – water
Recessive: an allele that is masked when a
dominant allele is present
E – energy
Punnett square – chart that shows all the
possible combinations of alleles that can
result from a genetic cross.
L – living space
Levels of Organization
Classification
Kingdoms (List at least 3 characteristics of
each kingdom below!)
Put the following in the correct order. Use 1 for
the smallest and 5 for the largest level of
organization in living things.
2____ tissues
Archaebacteria: lack nucleus, unicellular,
auto or heterotrophic
4____ organ systems
1____ cells
Eubacteria: lack nucleus, unicellular, auto
or heterotrophic
5____ organisms
3____ organs
Protista: unicellular or multicellular: auto or
heterotrophic, eukaryotes (nucleus)
Fungi: multicellular or unicellular,
eukaryotes, decomposers
Plant: multicellular, eukaryotic, autotrophs
Animal: multicellular, eukaryotic,
heterotrophic
Levels of Classification
D - Domain
K – Kingdom
P – Phylum
