EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – PRELIMINARY COURSE
Identifying Rocks Practical Assessment Task
Name:______________________________________ Date: _______________
This task uses Dot point – 8.3.1 – “perform a first-hand investigation and use second
hand data to classify several common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
using a key, with particular reference to those rocks in the local environment” - to test
the following outcomes in the syllabus.
P7 – identifies and describes the physical and chemical features of the environment.
P12 – discusses the validity and reliability of data gathered from first-hand
investigations and secondary sources.
P13 – identifies appropriate terminology and reporting styles to communicate
information and understanding in Earth and Environmental Science.
P14 – draws valid conclusions from gathered data and information.
TASK: You are provided with six rock samples by your teacher. For each sample use
your observations, your knowledge of the classification of rocks, and the key given in
this task for the identification of rocks to complete the answer sheet on the different
samples.
You are to complete all sections of the answer sheets in the spaces provided.
KEY TO IDENTIFICATION OF ROCKS.
1. Does the rock “fizz” when a drop of acid is placed on it? Yes – Go to 8, No – Go
to 2
2. Does the rock contain obvious crystals? Yes – Go to 6, No – Go to 3
3. Does the rock appear to be made of bits of other rocks? Yes – Go to 9, No – Go
to 4
4. Do bits of the rock fall off a freshly broken surface, when it is gently rubbed? Yes
– Go to 5, No – Go to 6
5. Does the rock contain shiny mica? Yes – Go to 6, No – Go to 9
6. Does the rock contain a preferred growth in the crystals? Yes – Go to 10, No –
Go to 7
7. The rock is an IGNEOUS rock. – Go to section on igneous rocks.
8. Does the rock have signs of fossils present? Yes – Go to 9, No – Go to 11
9. The rock is a SEDIMENTARY rock – Go to section on sedimentary rocks.
10. The rock is a METAMORPHIC rock – Go to section on metamorphic rocks.
11. Is the rock white in colour? Yes – Go to 112, No – Go to 13.
12. The rock is a contact METAMORPHIC marble
.
13. The rock is a lithic SEDIMENTARY limestone.
