Chapter 4 Study Guide– Genetics
Lesson 1 (Due by ___________ )
Heredity
Gene
Genetics
Allele
Dominant
Phenotype
Recessive
Genotype
Homozygous
Heterozygous
Chromosome
Law of Segregation
Law of Independent Assortment
1. Summarize the work of Mendel. Explain why Mendel’s work was so important for the
advancement of the study of genetics.
Mendel controlled the breeding, recorded the results, had a large sample size, repeated
experiments and observed multiple generations, and applied mathematics to results. Mendel’s
work furthered the knowledge of how traits are passed from parent to offspring.
2. Explain the difference between a gene and an allele.
An allele is a version of a gene (GG, Gg, gg)
3. Explain the law of segregation.
The law of segregation states that alleles separate during meiosis
4. Explain the law of independent.
Law of independent assortment states that when chromosomes (alleles) they do so
independently of other chromosomes and alleles (unless they are linked)
5. Compare heterozygous genotype and homozygous genotypes.
Heterozygous – having two different alleles for one trait
Homozygous- having the same allele for one trait
Lesson 2 (Due by ___________ )
Punnett Square
Pedigree
Incomplete dominance
Multiple alleles
Sex chromosomes
Polygenic inheritance
Genetic disorder
6. Distinguish between multiple alleles and polygenic inheritance.
7. Give an example of how the environment can affect an organism’s phenotype.
8. Explain the relationship between genes and the environment.
9. Summarize the symptoms of three different genetic disorders
Don’t forget Punnett Squares!
Extra Punnett Square Practice (Do these on separate paper!)
1. Purebred yellow x green
2. Heterozygous round x homozygous wrinkled
3. Homozygous purple x homozygous purple
4. Heterozygous tall x homozygous short
5. Short x short
6. Homozygous yellow x heterozygous yellow
7. Short x heterozygous tall
8. Purebred tall x heterozygous tall
9. Purebred short x hybrid tall
10. Homozygous yellow x Purebred yellow
