DENT 1370 LEC 3 LAB 3 CREDIT HOURS 4 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course includes a detailed study and practical application of the following procedures: oral inspection, alginate impression, model trimming, coronal polish, placement and removal of retraction material, oral brush biopsy, and applying pit and fissure sealants. COURSE PREREQUISITE (S): Successful completion of DENT 1360 RATIONALE: There are changes taking place within the State of Nebraska that will allow dental assistants to do more expanded functions. DENT 1350 and DENT 1360 does not contain enough time to add the additional expanded functions. A 3rd DENT 1370 will be added in the 3rd quarter. Identify areas of the face and oral cavity and demonstrate an oral inspection on a live patient using proper infection control 2. Demonstrate taking alginate impressions for a set of study models on a live patient using proper infection control 3. Identify proper equipment and materials and demonstrate proper model trimming technique for study models 4. Indentify instrumentation and materials for and demonstrate the correct method for a coronal polish on a live patient using proper infection control 5. Describe the types of retraction material and how each material is placed and removed 6. Discuss the function of an oral brush biopsy and demonstrate how an oral brush biopsy is done on a live patient using proper infection control 7. Discuss the functions and procedure for placing pit and fissure sealant TOPICAL UNIT OUTLINE/UNIT OBJECTIVES: Unit I Oral Inspection Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to: 1. List the three (3) reasons for performing an oral inspection 2. Explain how the oral inspection may influence treatment planning and assessing patient health 3. Identify, define and spell terminology associated with this procedure (normal and non-pathological deviations from normal) 4. List the armamentarium required for performing the procedure 5. Explain the difference between bi-manual and bi-digital palpation 6. Discuss why a patient’s records must be reviewed before doing an oral inspection 7. List the medical/dental conditions that may modify or contra-indicate this procedure 8. Explain and demonstrate proper procedures which will insure the patient’s comfort and safety 9. Describe and identify the parts of the oral cavity 10. Make accurate and appropriate chart entries from the findings of the oral inspection 11. Demonstrate the procedure of doing an oral inspection on a patient Unit II Alginate Impressions Upon completion of this unit, the dental assisting student will be able to: 1. Prepare an operatory for taking alginate impressions on a live patient 2. Explain the procedure for taking an alginate impression to the patient 3.
