The pelvic Girdle
 Withstand stress of wgt bearing and
locomotion
 Bones more massive than pect girdle
 Comprised of 2 “hip” bones
 Pelvis = coxal (hip) bones, sacrum,
coccyx
 Protection for organs of
abdominopelvic region, skeletal part
of birth canal
 Support for upper body
 Pelvic inlet = large superior opening
2 HIP BONES
 Ossa coxae = innominate(no name)
bones
 Fusion of 3 bones – ilium, ischium,
pubis – separate at birth
 Ilia articulate with sacrum – superior
of coxal bones
 Attaches pelvic girdle to axial
skeleton
 Pubis – inferior and anterior – PUBIC
SYMPHYSIS pad of fibrocartilage
forms a medial connection to
opposite pubic bone = PUBIC
SYMPHYSIS (relaxin a hormone
during pregnancy relaxes the PS)
 ischium – inferior and posterior –
ischial tuberosity our “seat”
 acetabulum = are of fusion of ilium,
pubis, ischium forms a deep socket
for femur
ILIUM
 largest of coxal bones
 large flared flat portion –
attachment of muscles (T & L)
 bony ridge of hip = iliac crest
 sacroiliac joint = where ilium
articulates with sacrum –
(posterior margin = auricular
surface – rough surface for
articulation)
 inferior/lateral = greater sciatic
notch for sciatic nerve = major
nerve of lower limbs
 posterior surface - Gluteal line
= attachment point of gluteal
muscles
 posterior superior iliac spine –
prominent spine above greater
sciatic notch – muscle att.
ISCHIUM
 inferior and posterior
 “L” shaped
 Lesser sciatic notch – for BV,
nerves, and small muscles
 Ischial spine – superior to lesser
sciatic notch
 Ischial tuberosity – posterior and
lateral on “ramus” of ischium
 Ramus fuses with pubis
PUBIS
 Inferior and anterior coxal bone
 Symphysis pubis
 Ischium ramus and pubic ramus
form OBTERATOR FORAMEN –
closed by sheet of collagen fibers
– surface for muscle attachment
 Pubic arch – inferior angle of 2
pubic bones
 Female 100 deg or more
 Male 90 deg or less
