The Real Number System
The Real Number System is a way
of classifying numbers. ALL
numbers are Real!!!! This
includes whole numbers, positive
and negative numbers, fractions,
mixed numbers, square roots,
terminating decimals, repeating
decimals, and decimal numbers
that never end nor repeat!
The Real Number System is split
up into two categories (subsets):
Irrational and Rational numbers.
Irrational Numbers include those
decimal numbers that never end
and never repeat and are often
given in square root forms.
Ex. 2.56789174658368…,√2
All other numbers are in the subset
of Rational numbers. Within the
subset of Rational numbers, there
are smaller subsets (groups) as
well:
Integers – which are the set
of all positive and negative whole
numbers.
{…-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4…}
Whole numbers – are the set
of numbers that start at zero.
1. Give an example of a real
number.
2. Give an example of an
irrational number.
3. Give an example of a rational
number.
4. Give an example of an integer.
5. Give an example of a whole
number.
6. Give an example of a counting
(also called natural) number.
7. Give an example of a rational
number that is not an integer,
whole number, nor a counting
number.
8. Classify the number pi.
9. Classify the number 0.
{0,1,2,3,4,5,6,…..}
Counting numbers – are the
set of numbers that begin with one.
{1,2,3,4,5,…..}
10. Classify -5.6
