Instructions:
1. Construct an 11 X 17 poster of the major topics and concepts discussed in
Chapter 12.
2. There are 9 concepts. Include a minimum of 6 on your poster. 3 marks
each.
a. Explanation.
b. Labeled diagram.
c. Relevant bold terms defined.
3. Organization will be evaluated on use of headings, subheadings, flow of
information and links of concepts to each other.
12.1 Evidence for Continental Drift
1. Describe a minimum of 3 evidences of continental drift. (pgs 507 -509)
How can continents move?
2. Summarize the evidence that suggests a possible mechanism by which
continents move including evidence from ocean and rock sediments as
well as evidence from paleomagnetism. (pgs. 510-512)
3. Summarize sea floor spreading. (pg. 512-513)
12.2 Features of Plate Tectonics
1. List the names, thicknesses and composition of the different layers of the
Earth. (p. 519)
2. Describe plate motion. Identify the lithosphere, athenosphere, continental
crust and upper mantle and explain how mantle convection is one of the
driving forces behind plate movement. (pg. 520-521)
3. Explain the forces of push and pull associated with plate motion. Include a
description of subduction, ridge push and slab pull and identify a
subduction zone. (pg.522)
4. List and describe the 3 types of plate interactions including the map
symbols used to identify them. Include all 3 types of convergent plate
boundary interactions. (pgs 523 – 526)
5. Describe how an earthquake is produced include the definition of
epicenter and focus. List and describe the 3 types of seismic waves
produce. (pg. 528-529)
6. List and describe composite and shield volcanoes and rift eruptions.
