Chemical Composition of Stars Lab Sheet Lab Objective (write out the objective from the board here) Name:_______________________ Class: M or W Period: 1, 3, 4 _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ Safety: Please remember all safety rules for labs. Tie back loose hair, roll up long sleeves, have NO FOOD OR DRINK out (not even water). Wash HANDS THROUGHLY after handling wire loops. DO NOT STICK ANYTHING into the flame unless directed to do so. Failure to follow safety rules = a zero and can result in loss of future labs. Lab Overview: As a group you will be inserting a nichrome wire loop that has been dipped into a solution. It is vital you handle the loop ONLY by it’s handle, especially after putting it into the flame. As you burn the solution in the flame all members of your group will observe the color of the flame it produces through diffraction grading glasses and record the spectrum you observe on this lab sheet. Lab Procedures: 1) Wear aprons at all times! 2) Be responsible and take no action unless directed. 3) View the flame through the diffraction grading glasses. 4) DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRE, only use the handle. It is vital to only put the wire loop back into the solution for which it is labeled for. Cross contamination will ruin your kit. 5) When done, alert Mr. Youngblood. Lab Station: Record here which lab station you were at. The number is on tab at the base of your test tubes. #__________ Observations: Part A Spectrums Spectrum of _________________ Spectrum of _________________ Spectrum of _________________ Spectrum of _________________ Part B For part B get the solution marked “X”, view its spectrum, record it. Compare it to the known solutions above and identify which it is. Spectrum of Unknown Solution Identity of metal:_______________________________ Post Lab Return glasses to Mr. Youngblood. Be sure lab station is in the same condition as it was when you began. Complete Analysis Questions on the Back ►►►►► Use page’s 32-34 from your text and information provided today to complete the questions below. Write IN COMPLETE SENTENCES. Attach extra sheets if needed. 1) Why must you use a different nichrome wire loop for each solution? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2) How did the spectrum’s differ for each sample? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3) If all the bands of colors observed were drawn on one band, what would it look like? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4) What might the unknown solution contain? How do you know? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5) How do the samples resemble stars? How can scientists tell what element are in a distant star? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6) How does temperature relate to the color of the sample and of stars? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 7) What is a continuous spectrum? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 8) What are emission lines? Explain. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 9) Why would each element have it’s own emission spectrum? How is this significant? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 10) If solutions were prepared for each type of metal from the periodic table, would the emission lines all be different? Explain. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 11) Compare and contrast an continuous spectrum to a emission spectrum. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 40 Points Possible! Points are given on a full, half or zero basis. Fully complete = full points, partial completion = half points, mostly incomplete = zero points.
