 Locating Points
 Finding areas and lengths
 Pythagorean Theorem
 Irrational numbers
 Finding slopes
Vocab
Hypotenuse- The side of the right triangle that is opposite the right angle. The
hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle.
Irrational number- A number that cannot be written as a fraction with a numerator and
a denominator that are integers. The decimal representation of an irrational number never
ends and never shows the repeating pattern of digits.
Perpendicular- meeting of right angles. For example the sides of a right triangle that
form the right angle are perpendicular.
Pythagorean Theorem- a statement about the relationship between the lengths of the
sides of a right triangle. The theorem states that if a and b are the lengths of the legs of a
right triangle and c is the length of the hypotenuse, then a squared + b squared = c
squared.
Rational Number- A number that can be written as a fraction with a numerator and a
denominator that are integers. The decimal representation of a rational number either
ends or repeats.
Real Numbers- the set of all rational numbers and irrational numbers. The number line
represents the set of real numbers.
Repeating Decimal- a decimal with a pattern of digits that repeats forever such as
0.33333… and 0.737373…repeating decimals are rational numbers.
Square Root- if A=s2 then s is the square root of a. For example, -3 and 3 are square
roots of 9 because 3 x 3= 9 and –3 x –3= -9.
Terminating Decimal- a decimal that ends or terminates, such as 0.5 or 0.125.
Terminating decimals are rational numbers.
Things To Know And Worksheets
 Area of a triangle is ½ x base x height
 Area of a square is length x width
 Area of a circle is r2
 The Pythagoras theorem is A2+B2=C2
 A theory is an educated guess
 A theorem is a well studied theory assumed true
 To graph an equation you can use the pattern Y=Mx+B
M stands for the slope and B stands for the starting point on the Y axis
Example 1:
Y=2x+3
The slope
is 2
The
intercept is

Example 2: Y=1/2x-4

Example Problems
1. A right triangle has a hypotenuse of 3 and a side of 2.What is
the other side length?
32-22=
9-4= 5 5squared rooted =2.23
2. A points of (2,3) and (5,7) what is the slope of the line
4/3=1.3333333333333333
3. The points (0,0) and (1,1)
If the polygon is a square what are the other points?
(1,0) and (0,1)
4. Bob was walking up the ramp with a slope of 25 and has a run
of 10.What is the rise of the ramp?
25/10=2.5
5. A right triangle has two sides of 5 and 5.What is the length of
the side?
52 +52=
25+25=50 50square rooted= 7.07
6. Tell whether the triangle with the given side lengths is a right
triangle.
1. 10,24,26
100+576=676=26

Define these words:
Irrational number: number that cannot be written as a fraction
over a numerator or denominator that aren’t integers. s
Terminal number: decimal that ends
Square of number: number multiplied by itself
Square root of a number: the number or quantity which when
squared will produce a given number or quantity 3 is the square
root of 9
