Materials Needed for the Lesson:
Computers with Internet Access (Ideally enough for all students)
Group Worksheets
World Map Worksheet
Pen or Pencil
Paper
Colored Pencils or Crayons
Methods of Evaluating Student Progress/Performance:
Student progress/performance is evaluated during and at the end of the lesson. The
teacher can assess student progress through observation of student participation in
groups. The teacher can look at the worksheets to make sure students are understanding
and attaining the information. In addition, the teacher can observe the “expert” students
teach other group members about the information they acquired. Finally, the teacher can
assess the knowledge of each individual student through evaluation of the exit pass
activity.
Differention for Special Needs:
Students with a range of special needs are addressed throughout the lesson. Students
work in groups to complete the worksheets and gather information. Therefore, if a
student is having difficulty the group members can assist that student with the problem.
In addition, the lesson integrates technology so students who learn best by physically
interacting with the material benefit. The map activity also helps students visualize the
regions affected by the international organizations. This sort of visual aid will promote
understanding of the content and addresses students with a range of special needs.
Subject Matter Integration/Extension:
This lesson fits in the middle of the unit of understanding conditions of developed and
developing nations. This lesson introduces students to international organizations and the
different goals they pursue. Many of these organizations address the needs of developing
countries and their goals to help those in need. This is critical for students to understand
the importance of international organizations in order to build upon future lessons, as
well as function in society. Students can use the information from this lesson to further
their learning on social, economic, and cultural conditions of nations in the contemporary
world.
Reflections/PPT’s in Lesson:
This lesson fits in with my philosophy of teaching because it promotes student-centered
learning. Students work in groups to acquire necessary information. They interact with
the material and have the ability to look deeper into the elements of the lesson that
interest them personally. I believe this is critical to student learning. I believe studentcentered learning also engages students in the learning process, which serves to motivate
students to become more interested to learn the content.
