Science.7 The Skeletal System Name ______________________________ Date _______________________________ Reading & Questions Essential Questions 1. What are the structures of the skeletal system? 2. What is the function of the skeletal system? 3. How do we move? Vocabulary bone, ligament, bone marrow, joint, cartilage Objectives 1. Identify the structures of the skeletal system. 2. Identify the function of the skeletal system. What is the Skeletal System? The skeletal system is all of the bones in the body and the tissues such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage that connect them. There are 206 bones in your body. Your teeth are a part of your skeletal system but they are not counted as bones. How does the Skeletal System help us? Support The main job of the skeleton is to provide support for our body. Without your skeleton your body would collapse into a heap. Without bones you'd be just a puddle of skin and guts on the floor. How does your skeleton support your body? Protection The skeleton protects your internal organs and fragile body tissues. The brain, eyes, heart, lungs and spinal cord are all protected by your skeleton. What does the skeleton protect? Movement Your bones are levers which are pulled by your muscles to cause movement. Muscle and bone are connected by tendons. A joint is found where two or more bones connect. Joints make movement possible. Ligaments hold bones together at the joints. Cartilage is a flexible tissue that helps to cushion joints so that bones do not rub together. What is a joint? What is a ligament and where is it found? What is cartilage and where is it found? What are bones made of? There are two kinds of bone tissue, compact bone and spongy bone. Compact bone is dense and spongy bone contains many open spaces. Blood vessels run through compact bones and supply them with nutrients. Bone marrow inside long bones produces blood cells and stores fat. Bones also store calcium. *Do You Remember? Ca element #20 on the Periodic Table. What are bones made of? Are bones alive? How do I keep my bones healthy? Yes, bones are alive. They are made of living cells and they need regular exercise. Walking, jogging, running and other physical activities are important in keeping your bones strong and healthy. Strengthen your skeleton by drinking milk and eating other dairy products (like low-fat cheese, frozen yogurt, and ice cream). They all contain calcium which helps bones harden and become strong. How can you keep your bones healthy?
