33. Greek mythology is flavored with stories of nymphs—beautiful young goddesses who lived in the forest. What
follows is the story of a nymph and the word she contributed to our language.
Long ago, there lived a beautiful nymph with a voice so haunting and melodious that Aphrodite, the goddess of
love, often came down to earth from Mt. Olympus to hear her sing and tell stories.
Tragically, one day the beautiful nymph brought sorrow into her life by lying to the wife of Zeus, the chief god. In
ager, Zeus’ wife punished the nymph by taking away her ability to use her voice. The nymph found it impossible to speak
except to repeat the last words that had been said to her.
In this state, the poor nymph met Narcissus, a young man so handsome that women fainted when they saw him.
The nymph immediately fell in love, but the heartsick creature could not express her feelings. She could only helplessly
repeat the words Narcissus spoke. Thinking her to be stupid, he rejected her.
The grief-stricken nymph begged for help in a silent prayer to her friend Aphrodite. As an act of pity, the goddess
caused the nymph’s body to melt into the cool air so her suffering would end. However, not able to bear a world without
it, Aphrodite allowed the nymph’s voice to remain.
To this day, it is said, if you call the nymph in a certain way, her haunting voice will answer.
One of your lesson words is the nymph’s name. Write the word using a capital letter.
