5.3 – Organic Compounds
An organic compound always contains the element _________________.
_________________ compounds include all those that do not contain carbon, as well as a
few that are exceptions, like CO2, CO, and carbonates like CaCO3.
Organic chemistry is the study of compounds that contain carbon. Organic compounds
are everywhere – they make up living things, medicines, fossil fuels, foods, and many
other substances.
You can tell if a compound is organic by looking at its chemical formula. It will always
contain carbon, and usually hydrogen as well. Notice that the carbon is always written
first.
For example:

CH4 (methane – natural gas)

CH3CH2OH (ethanol – “drinking” alcohol)

C8H4N4O2 (caffeine – a stimulant found in coffee and black tea)
A ___________________ is an organic compound that contains only the elements carbon
and hydrogen.
Hydrocarbons and other organic molecules can be illustrated in a couple of different
ways:
This is called a space-filling model. The larger atoms are
the carbons and the smaller atoms are the hydrogens.
This is a ball-and-stick model of the same molecule as
above.
They can also be shown in the form of a _________________ formula, which is a simple
drawing of the arrangement of the atoms.
Many hydrocarbons are ____________________. For example, propane (C3H8) is
commonly used for fuel for barbecues and other outdoor appliances.
An ___________________ is one kind of organic compound that contains the elements
C, H, and O. There are many different types of alcohols. Some of them are very useful
as ____________________. A solvent is a liquid that can dissolve other substances.
Here are some examples: Identify them as organic or inorganic.
