The story took place at Welton Academy, a strict boarding school, for boys only. Neil,
Todd and their friends learned at the same class at school. They had a new English
teacher, Mr. Keating, who tried to make them to think by themselves, to make changes in
their lives and to seize the day, by teaching them poetry and making extraordinary
lessons. For example, at one of the lessons he told the students to stand on his desk, in
order to explain them that they should look at the world from different points of view.
Neil discovered that Keating was member at a secret organization, which called “Dead
Poets Society”. Keating explained to Neil and his friends that the purpose of this society
was “to suck the marrow out of life”, he cited Thoreau. The members of the society met
and read poetry. The boys decided to resurrect the society. They had secret meetings at a
cave near to the school.
One day, Neil got a part at a play. He knew that his father won’t let him to act so he
didn’t tell him about it, but a few days before the performance he found out and wanted
Neil to quit. Neil performed at the play anyway. His father was very mad at him, and he
decided to enroll Neil to a military school. Later that night Neil committed suicide.
Neil’s suicide caused to the discovery of the “Dead Poets Society”. All the members of
the society were punished or expelled. Keating was accused of Neil’s death and was
fired.
