Evaluating Algebraic Expressions Study Guide
Algebraic Expressions
contain a combination of variables, numbers,
and at least one operation.
(Variable = a, x, y; number = 1, 2, 56, 24;
operation = +, -, ×, ÷)
To Evaluate an Expression follow these steps:
1. Write the algebraic expression
2. Substitute the values given for the variables
3. Simplify the expressions (Remember to use PEMDAS)
Follow the examples:
Evaluate each expression, if:
a=3
b=5
c=8
x = 10
Step 1
a+b-y
5 + 3x
Step 2
3+5-2
5 + 3(10)
Step 3
8
-2
y=2
2b – a + c
2(5) – 3 + 8
5 + 30
6
z=1
10 – 3 + 8

Your turn: Complete the next step:
Step 1
