Example 1: Translate the verbal phrase into an expression.
a.) 8 times a quantity 4 plus a number n
b.) 12 decreased by a number x
c.) The quotient of the square of a number j and 5
Example 2: The length of a building is 20 feet more than its width w. Write an expression for the length of the building.
Example 3:
a.) Ashley and 4 friends meet to have dinner at a restaurant. Everyone decides to order the nightly
special. Write an expression for the total cost of the meals, where s is the cost of the nightly special.
b.) Sean works with 5 other people at an ice cream stand. All of the workers put their tips into a jar and
share the amount in the jar equally at the end of the day. Write an expression for each person’s share
(in dollars) of the tips.

