MORE SUBSTITUTION
ALGEBRA I
5/2012
1. y=5x-10
y=3x +8
2. x = y-8
-x-y = 0
USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY IN SUBSTITUTION
4y-5x = 9
x- 4y =11
x-4y(+4y) = 11 (+4y)
therefore x = 11 +4y
use the distributive property 4y -5(4y +11) =9
4y – 20y -55(+55) =9
-16y = 9 (+55)
-16y = 64
y =-4
substitute for y and 4(-4) -5x =9
-16 (+16) -5x = 9 (+16)
-5x = 25
x = -5
solution: (-5,-4)
The following examples may use the distributive property.
3. -2x +y = 8
3x +2y = 9
4. 2x + y = 14
-3x +4y = -10
5. y = -3x +4
x = 2y +6
6. 3x – y = 11
5y -7x =1
7. y=1.2x-4
2,2x +5 =y
8. x = 7-2y
2x +y =5
