The Impact of Musculoskeletal Disorders on Americans
Opportunities for Action
What are Musculoskeletal disorders?
They cover the human body from head to toe …
• Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions
• Disorders and conditions of the spine
(e.g., low back/neck pain)
• Spinal deformity and related conditions
(e.g., scoliosis)
• Osteoporosis
• Cancers of the bone and connective tissue
• Musculoskeletal injuries
Opportunities for Action
Most Americans are surrounded by neighbors, colleagues,
and relatives with pain and disability from bone and joint
diseases and disorders.
Opportunities for Action
Why do these disorders matter?
Musculoskeletal disorders:
• Are common and often painful, limiting, and debilitating
• Affect Americans of all ages
• Have ripple effects across the life span
• Are costly, and will become more so as the population ages
Opportunities for Action
Musculoskeletal disorders are common
and often debilitating.
• 1 of 2 adults in the U.S. – 126.6 million
people – were diagnosed with
musculoskeletal conditions in 2012
• Nearly 18 million adults (6% of the U.S.
population) reported being unable to
perform at least one common activity
because of these conditions
Opportunities for Action
Musculoskeletal conditions are more common —
by far — than other chronic conditions.

Opportunities for Action
They affect Americans of all ages.
• Children and adolescents
• Working-age adults, including
military personnel
• Older adults
Opportunities for Action
They’re costly, and will become more so.
Musculoskeletal disorders cost $213
billion in 2011 in direct and indirect
costs, or 1.4% of the U.S. Gross Domestic
Product (GDP).
U.S. government outlay for
defense, 2015: $813.9 billion
Treatment costs for patients with musculoskeletal
disorders and other conditions, 2011 = $796 billion
Direct and indirect costs of musculoskeletal
disorders, 2011 = $213 billion (1.4% of GDP)
Musculoskeletal disorder treatment costs plus
indirect costs = $874 billion, 2015 (5.7% of GDP)

Invest.
1
In prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment to improve outcomes
and lower costs
2
Research priorities
• Comparative effectiveness of treatments
• New treatment and prevention strategies
• Role of behavior change
3
Improved access and
coordination of care
