Meekness
The Character Journal is a monthly e-zine designed to help parents teach Biblical character qualities to their children.
Each month a different character quality is presented with suggestions for Bible lessons and projects. The length of
time you spend teaching these principles to your children each day is not nearly as important as your sincerity and
consistency. Begin each time with a relevant hymn or chorus. Then take a verse, theme or story from the suggestions
below as the basis for your daily "Bible Time" with your family. Give relevant application of the lesson to your family;
and don't forget to ask your children the questions: Who? What? Where? Why? When? and How? Get each member
of the family involved by assigning different verses to be read. Finally, conclude your time with family prayer.

Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing
or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their own strength to defend them against injustice.
Thus, meekness toward evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify His
elect, and that He will deliver His elect in His time. (Is. 41:17, Lu. 18:1-8) Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to selfassertiveness and self-interest. It stems from trust in God's goodness and control over the situation. The gentle person is not
occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will. (Gal. 5:23)

Meekness Requires Death to Self
Death to self involves the following concepts:
 Presenting our bodies as living sacrifices unto God (see Romans 12:1-2)
 Surrendering to God our rights as Christ did in coming into the world (see Philippians 2:5-8)
 Committing ourselves to carry out God's will at any cost (see Luke 9:24)
 Recognising anger as a symptom of unyielded rights (see James 1:20-21)
Share with your children an appropriate examples of unyielded rights that caused you to become angry. Describe the
circumstances through which God motivated you to yield those rights to Him. Tell how God rewarded you after you
submitted to His will.
Share a second illustration which you submitted or went ahead in a matter which was not God's will and which brought
God's discipline. Discuss situations in which it would not be God's will to yield (see Romans 6:16).

Take All The Keys, Lord
Dr. F. B..Meyer came to a crucial, transitional time in his ministry. He sat dejectedly in his study. "My ministry is
unfruitful, and I lack spiritual power." he said to himself. Suddenly Christ seemed to stand beside him. "Let me have
the keys to your life," Christ said. The experience was so realistic that he reached into his pocket and took out a bunch
of keys! "Are all the keys here?" "Yes, Lord, all except the key to one small room in my life." Christ said: "If you cannot
trust me in all rooms of your life, I cannot accept any of the keys." Dr. Meyer was so overwhelmed with the feeling that
Christ was moving out of his life because he was excluding Him from one interest in his life that he cried out, "Come
back, Lord, and take the keys to all the rooms of my life!"

General Gordon's Medal
It is related of General Gordon, affectionately known as "Chinese Gordon," that when the English government sought
to reward him for his magnificent service in China, he declined all money and titles, but accepted a gold medal on
which his name and a record of his thirty-three engagements was inscribed. After his death the medal could not be
found. Finally it was learned that he had sent it to Manchester during a famine, with a request that it be melted and
used to buy bread for the famishing poor. In his diary that day he had written these words: "The last and only thing that
I had in this world that I valued. I have given over to the Lord Jesus Christ."

George Muller's Secret
To one who asked him the secret of his service, George Muller said: "There was a day when I died, utterly died;" and,
as he spoke, he bent lower and lower until he almost touched the floor-"died to George Muller, his opinions,
preferences, tastes, and will-died to the world, its approval or censure-died to the approval or blame even of my
brethren and friends-and since then I have studied only to show myself approved unto God."

Moody's Monopoly
A committee of ministers in a certain city was discussing the possibility of having D.L. Moody to serve as the evangelist
during a city-wide evangelistic campaign. Finally, one young minister who did not want to invite Moody stood up and
said, "Why Moody? Does he have a monopoly of the Holy Spirit?" There was silence. Then an old Godly minister
spoke up: "No, he does not have a monopoly of the Holy Spirit; but the Holy Spirit has a monopoly of D.L. Moody."
How Jesus Demonstrated Meekness (Philippians 2:5-8)

Perhaps the most difficult right to yield is the right of making final decisions. Without yielding this right to God, we will never
experience God's full potential for our lives. When Christ was on earth, He made no decisions on His own but did only that which
was directed by His Heavenly Father. His continual attitude was "Not my will, but Thine be done." Once we have that same
attitude, it is then possible for God to accomplish His will through our lives. If we have the attitude that says, "I will do this no
matter what God says," then we are not following the example of Christ but of Satan. Isaiah 14 describes the fall of Satan and it
reveals his attitude of pride and rebellion (v.v.12-14). Satan says, "I will...." The Lord Jesus says, "Father, not My will, but Thine
be done." If we want to live for God and be used by Him to make an impact upon this generation for Jesus Christ, then it is so
important that we allow Him to make the decisions in our lives. Who's authority are you submitted to? Are you controlled by the
Holy Spirit? Have you ever yielded your rights to God?
Meek as a Lamb

Understand how sheep illustrate the quality of meekness by studying references to sheep in Scripture.
Young children will enjoy making sheep masks after studying the meekness of sheep. Using paper or Styrofoam plates, cut out the
centre, leaving the rim. Around the edge of the rim let the children glue on cotton balls. From white construction paper, cut out two
lamb-shaped ears and staple to the sides of the plate. Use string to tie the mask to each child's head with his face peering from the
hole. Now have the children practice being meek as little lambs.

God's Blueprint for Parenting - Part I
(How to Make Your Home a "Heaven upon Earth" for Your Children)
For some time now, I have been interested in the relationship between how God the Heavenly Father deals with His
children and how we as earthly parents, should relate to our own children. For example, in the garden of Eden, God
first established and clearly explained the boundaries for Adam and his wife: In Genesis 2:16,17 "…God commanded
the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,
thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Notice that God did not remove the
object of temptation. He first of all established the boundaries, explained to them the consequences if they would
disobey, and left the object of temptation in clear view and within easy reach.
Many parents believe that the wisest thing to do is to remove every ornament and every box of chocolates out of the
reach of their child. But that is not a lasting solution because it does not deal with the root problem. The child simply
learns that the only objects that are "off limits" are the objects he cannot reach. The child needs to have his boundaries
clearly explained, he needs to be taught the meaning of the word "no," and he needs to be told the consequences of
overstepping those boundaries. You may lose a few ornaments in the training process but the dividends this will pay in
your child's life, will be priceless. Anyhow, better your own ornaments than the neighbours' antique oriental vase!
God did not remove every object of temptation. He established boundaries and clearly explained the consequences
that overstepping those boundaries would produce. We can all tell the nightmare stories of the friend's toddler who
came to visit and ran through the house like a tornado demolishing everything in sight! The boundaries for that child
were most likely never established in his own home. He has probably never learned the meaning of the word "no". And
his parents have most likely been inconsistent in the following through with discipline.
So there is a direct relationship between how God deals with His children and how we should parent our own children.
I want to focus today on the two great works that God has set out to accomplish in a person's life, and relate them to
the responsibilities of parenthood. Firstly, God takes the life that is alienated from Him by sin, and by His grace and
mercy, He establishes a relationship with that individual. He cares for that person. He meets his needs, and provides a
secure relationship with "round the clock" access into His presence. He loves that individual. He knows everything
about that person, and He is so deeply interested and concerned about the well-being of that one individual that if he
had been the only person who had ever sinned, God would still have sent His Son to die on the cross. Theologians call
this great work "justification".
The second great work in which God is involved, is the process of changing our behaviour from the ways of our old
sin-nature to that of the new standards taught and demonstrated by Christ; the process by which God transforms a
person into the image of His Son. Theologians call this process "sanctification".
But the point that I want to emphasise is that before God begins to change our behaviour, He first establishes a
relationship with us. He does not begin the process of sanctification until He has first completed the work of
justification. This, I believe, is of vital significance! Many child psychologists emphasise the importance of changing the
child's behaviour and completely miss the essential prerequisite of first establishing and building a meaningful
relationship with the child. In God's framework of redemption this must come first! Justification, then sanctification.
First, He establishes a relationship with that individual, then He begins His great work of lovingly changing that
person's behaviour until it conforms to His own will and standards. We completely miss this essential element in the
parenting process today. Behaviour modification is important but it cannot be successful unless a meaningful
relationship is first established with the child.
How is such a relationship established? Again, let us look at some significant aspects of God's relationship with His
children and apply it to the role of earthly parents. Matthew 6:32 says, "For your Heavenly Father knoweth...."
God knows His children! He knows their strengths and weaknesses. He knows their needs and fears. He knows their
deepest sorrows, and He knows the deepest longings of their hearts. Perfectly, lovingly, individually, God knows His
children.
A friend had just moved into a new home - another major relocation following her husband's second redundancy. She
suddenly noticed a dead sparrow lying on the garage roof. Opening the back door, another was seen on the patio!
Immediately she recalled the words of the Lord: "Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not
fall on the ground without your Father [knowing]. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not

therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:29-31). Her spirits lifted as she acknowledged the
goodness of God and was assured in her heart that despite the seeming traumas of life, God loves and plans wisely
for His own. God knows His children!
How well do you know your children? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What are their joys and sorrows?
What are their deepest needs? You need to know these things if you are to have a meaningful relationship with your
child.
But Jesus goes on to say in John 14:2, "I go to prepares a place for you...." God is preparing a place for His children. It
will be a wonderful place; we call it Heaven. As parents, we are responsible to provide a place for our children.
Whether its a caravan, a semi-detached, or a mansion, parents have the responsibility to make that place a "Heavenon-earth" for their children. In our next issue we will look at some of the characteristics of a "Heavenly" home.
