Genetics Unit Objectives Students will: 1. distinguish between dominant and recessive traits. 2. identify Mendel as a leader in the field of genetics and his accomplishments. 3. summarize Mendel’s laws. 4. explain how probability is used in genetic predictions. 5. construct Punnett squares to complete genetic problems involving simple dominance, codominance, incomplete dominance, and multiple alleles. 6. infer genotype based on a test cross. 7. interpret pedigrees. 8. contrast dominant and recessive genetic disorders. 9. consider the inheritance of genetic diseases including Tay Sachs, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, PKU, and hemophilia. 10. compare and contrast patterns of inheritance that do not follow Mendel’s laws. 11. explain how traits are influenced by the environment. 12. relate genes, traits, chromosomes, and DNA. 13. compare and contrast sex-linked, sex-limited, and sex-influenced traits. 14. identify different parts of blood (red blood cells, serum). 15. describe antigen and antibody specificity and its relation to blood transfusions. 16. explain the relevance of Rh incompatibility during pregnancy and birth.
