Equations 5
1.
An operator on a production line in a car assembly plant is given a box
containing n windscreen wipers. She uses 3 on each car until all that
remain are 2 faulty wipers. A check shows that she has fitted the wipers
on 58 cars.
Form an equation in n and solve it.
2.
Nia weighs 4 kg less than Madge who weighs 3 kg less than Penny.
Altogether they weigh 137 kg.
If Madge weighs x kg, what is the weight of each of Penny and Nia in
terms of x?
How much does Madge weigh?
3.
Laura goes to a shop that sells two models of radio. One cost three times
as much as the other and the two together cost £72. Laura’s mother
wants to know the cost of the cheaper one.
If the cheaper radio costs £x form an equation in x.
What should Laura’s answer be?
4.
Keith and Sheila go into a café because they want
a hot drink. Keith has a cup of tea and a cake,
while Sheila has a cup of coffee and 2 cakes.
Coffee costs 15p more than tea, and each cake is
35p more than a cup of coffee.
If a cup of tea costs x pence write down, in terms
of x the cost of
a cup of coffee
a cake
2 cakes
The total cost of the tea, coffee and cakes is £4.15.
Form an equation in x and solve it.
Hence write down the cost of
a cup of tea
a cup of coffee
a cake
