RICE IN LONDON- GLOBAL URBAN LAB
SPRING 2013
The School of Social Sciences Gateway Program and Policy Studies offers the Rice in London program
featuring Global Urban Lab that provides a platform for the Rice students to analyze a particular urban
problem or issue to determine how today’s emerging global cities such as London and Istanbul handle
changing circumstances, while they participate in Rice approved courses and earn a significant
internship experience.

COURSES & INTERNSHIP
Rice collaborates with an organization called CAPA International Education in London---for classes,
classrooms, administrative support, and everything else that will make you feel part of the program.
You can find more information about CAPA here: http://programs.capa.org/ricelondon CAPA is
located in the "South Kensington" area, near Earls Court. This will be your academic home-away-fromRice, where you receive mail, attend classes, etc.
The courses, with the exception of the POST 350- Global Urban Lab, are taught by local instructors in
London from universities such as the London School of Economics. The students will receive direct Rice
credit, which is graded, not ungraded transfer credit.

Required- POST 350- Global Urban Lab
A project-based course taught by Dr. Michael Emerson from both Houston and London. The
group will meet in December, to discuss the research topics for the spring semester before
departure. The students will have requirements for regular updates. Dr. Emerson will be in
London several times for lectures and to help with the project along with Dr. Rusk and Dr.
Ostdiek at alternating intervals. In addition, the group will join other Rice students in
Istanbul, Turkey during spring break for lectures, meetings, discussions and field trips. The
students will be expected to produce a 10 page factual white paper at the end of the
program regarding their research project. A selection of these papers will be featured in a
report that will be published by the Gateway program in collaboration with the Kinder
Institute of Urban Research.
Required- SOSC 422- Internship Abroad
The internships are arranged for you based on a questionnaire you will fill out with our
London provider (CAPA). An internship coordinator in London will work to find something
that fits your preferences, and you may have to interview with the internship for them to
approve you.

Required- POST 359- Analyzing and Exploring the Global City: London- Modernity, Empire and
Globalization.
Students may choose one other course for the semester from the selection below. (Course
descriptions can be found in the Rice University Course Catalog http://registrar.rice.edu)

HOUSING
In London you will live in a flat and live a London life. You will live in a shared apartment/student
residence within commuting distance of CAPA’s centrally located London Program Center in the Royal
Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Depending on the numbers, the students may live with other Rice
students in a flat, but not necessarily so.
COST
The total cost for the program is essentially the same as a semester at Rice and all current financial aid
applies.
The student pays Rice tuition and fees (but not room and board) and the urban lab fee $5,800 (by
registering in POST 350). In return, the program includes the courses in London, the London
internship, the Global Urban Lab experience, housing and weekly board stipend and the week in
Istanbul. It also includes a London Underground pass for local transportation as well as a trip to Bath
and other cultural activities.

You will receive a 40 GBP weekly food stipend and a Zone 1 and 2 travel card, good on the
bus and underground systems for the semester.
NOT INCLUDED- Airfare to London, books and other personal living expenses not
included.
COURSE REGISTRATION
Once approved for the program, the students will register during the normal Spring 2013 registration
period for the specific Rice courses.

- Identify at least two focus areas for your POST 350 Global Urban Lab research project.
(The Spring 2013 overall themes are: immigration, transportation, urban sports, city
culture.)
