MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH GAME
NAME OF GAME: Slope Tac-Toe
STANDARD(S): 7.3.6, 8.3.6 – Algebra – Find slope when two points are
known. (Extension: Find the slope of a linear equation and write the
equation of the line given the slope and a point on the line.)
Materials: Deck of card, slope tac-toe game
pages 1 and 2, markers
Players: 2
DIRECTIONS:
1. Use a standard deck with Ace and Jack (do not use Kings or Queens) where Ace = 1,
Jack = 0, red cards = negative numbers, and black cards = positive numbers.
OR
Use an Everyday Math Deck with cards 0 – 9 where black cards = positive, blue
cards = negative.
2. Player 1 picks 2 cards and places them on the game page 1 under “Point 1.”
3. Player 2 picks 2 cards and places them on the game page 1 under “Point 2.”
4. Both players “race” to calculate the slope.
Slope = y2 - y1
x2 - x1
5. The first correct player places a marker on the matching grid square if available.
(Game Page 2)
6. The winner is the player with the most markers on the board at the end of the game
OR three in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
Extension: Now that you have the slope calculated, find the equation of the line
 By graphing
 By substitution of slope and point values into the equation y = mx + b
