The Word of God
Welcome & Quiet Time (* indicates when to stand) Welcome to worship today. We’re glad you’ve come
to glorify God with us. We invite you to take part in everything today. Follow the singing with the words in this
bulletin, and come to the Table for communion. You are invited to stay for refreshments after the service.
*Gathering Song: O Bless The Lord, My Soul
O bless the Lord, my soul! His grace to thee proclaim! And all that is within me join to bless his holy Name!
O bless the Lord, my soul! His mercies bear in mind! Forget not all his benefits! The Lord to thee is kind.
He will not always chide; he will with patience wait; his wrath is ever slow to rise and ready to abate.
He pardons all thy sins, prolongs thy feeble breath; he healeth thine infirmities and ransoms thee from death.
He clothes thee with his love, upholds thee with his truth; and like the eagle he renews the vigor of thy youth.
Then bless his holy Name, whose grace hath made thee whole, whose loving-kindness crowns thy days:
O bless the Lord, my soul!
Priest: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
All:
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
Priest: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid.
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
*Song of Praise: Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; all else be naught to me, save that thou art; thou my best thought, by
day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my great Father;
thine own may I be; thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.
High King of heaven, when victory is won, may I reach heaven’s joys, bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my heart,
whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
*All: Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your
people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he
may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A Reading from 1 Corinthians
(1:1-9)
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints,
together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and
ours:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus,
for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- just as the testimony
of Christ has been strengthened among you-- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the
revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on
the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Leader: The Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.
*Gradual: When I Look Into Your Holiness
When I look into Your holiness, when I gaze into Your loveliness, when all things that surround become
shadows in the light of You. When I found the joy of reaching Your heart, when my will becomes enthralled
in Your love. When all things that surround become shadows in the light of You.
I worship You. I worship You. The reason I live is to worship You. (Repeat)
*The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ According to John
All: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
(1:29-42)
John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the
world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’
I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did
not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit
descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified
that this is the Son of God.”
The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he
exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him,
“Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They
came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the
afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He
first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed).
He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called
Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
All:
Praise to you Lord Christ.
Sermon
*Leader: Let us stand and profess our faith using the words of the Nicene Creed.
All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen
and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being
with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from
heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day
he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father
and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
*Prayers of the People
Leader: From the rising of the sun to its setting, let us pray to the Lord.
That the people of God in all the world may worship in spirit and in truth, let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That the Church may discover again that unity which is the Father’s will, and that our bishops
Michael, Shannon, Susan, and Ted would minster in rich apostolic power, let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That the nations of the earth may seek after the ways that make for peace as you guide Barack
our President, and Donald our President-elect, let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That the whole creation, groaning in travail, may be set free to enjoy the glorious liberty of the
children of God, let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That the sick may be healed, the dead raised, the hungry fed, the lonely set into families, the
homeless housed, and Your kingdom extended through the earth, let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That you would be with those we bring before you today, especially ____________________,
let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: That all who with Christ have entered the shadow of death may rest in peace and rise in glory,
let us pray to the Lord:
All:
Hear our prayer.
Leader: Let us commend the world, to which Christ came, to the mercy and protection of God.
Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone
might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our
hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your
Name. Amen.
Leader: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
All: Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve
you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Priest: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all
those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us
from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
Exchange of Peace
Priest:
All:
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Communion
Offertory: “The Star” by Kathy Mattea (Worship Team)
*Doxology: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise
him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Eucharistic Prayer B
Priest:
The Lord be with you.
All:
And also with you.
Priest:
Lift up your hearts.
All:
We lift them to the Lord.
Priest:
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All:
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and
with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
All (Sung): Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of his glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Priest: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in
creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all
in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son.
For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of
the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have
brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he
died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it
to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of
me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink
this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness
of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O
Father,
All: We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;
Priest: And we offer this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from
your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts
that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your
Son in his sacrifice that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness
of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your
saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the
firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in
him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray,
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive
those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Priest breaks the consecrated bread and says:
Priest: Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
All:
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and
feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
[NOTE: All are welcome to receive Communion, whatever your faith tradition. Please receive the bread in the open palm of
your hand. Then, either consume the bread and move to a chalicer and receive from the chalice by guiding the base of the
chalice to your mouth or take the chalice from the chalice minister. Or, you may intinct or dip the bread into the chalice and
consume it. The glass chalice contains non-alcoholic wine for those who do not wish to consume alcohol for any reason. If
you do not wish to receive communion but would like a blessing, please come forward with your arms crossed over your
chest.]
Communion Song: You Are My All in All
You are my strength when I am weak; You are the treasure that I seek. You are my all in all. Seeking You as
a precious jewel; Lord, to give up, I’d be a fool. You are my all and all.
(Chorus:) Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name. Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name.
Taking my sin, my cross, my shame; Rising again, I bless Your Name. You are my all in all. When I fall down
You pick me up; When I am dry You fill my cup. You are my all in all. (Chorus)
*Post-Communion Prayer: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us
sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we
may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved
as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying
that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
*Blessing
*Song of Dismissal: Hear Our Praises
May our homes be filled with dancing; may our streets be filled with joy. May injustice bow to Jesus as the
people turn to pray.
(Chorus:) From the mountain to the valley, hear our praises rise to You. From the heavens to the nations,
hear our singing fill the air.
May our light shine in darkness as we before the cross. May your glory fill the whole earth as the water over
the seas. (Chorus)
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. (Chorus)
Priest: Alleluia. Let us bless the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia!
