Grade 11 Applied Scale Factors & Ratios
1. A 36 cm long object is reduced to a 4 cm long design. Determine the scale factor and ratio used for this
reduction.
2. An office measures 8.4 m long and 5.2 m wide. In the blueprint, the office measures 21 cm long and 13
cm wide. Determine the scale factor and ratio used to reduce the office into a blueprint.
3. A 1.5 cm tall object is constructed into a model with a height of 45 cm. Determine the scale factor and
ratio used to enlarge this object.
4. A football field from measures 100 m long and 60 m wide. If designed down using a 1 cm : 50 cm scale
ratio, what scale factor is used for the reduction and what are the dimensions of the drawing in cm?
5. A microscopic object was blown up using a 15 cm : 1 mm scale. Determine the scale factor used for the
enlargement and if the enlarged sketch is 6 cm long, how long is the actual object in mm?
8. The O’Brien’s are building a rectangular shaped patio based on their paper design. The actual width of
the patio is going to be 2.5 m. The width in the scale drawing is 12.5 cm.
a) What scale factor is being used for the reduction? What is the scale ratio of the diagram?
b) If the length of the patio in the design is 20 cm, what is the area of the real patio going to be? (L x W)
c) How much will the patio cost if the cement squares cost $20.00 per square meter?
9. An architectural design of a silo (a cylinder in shape) shows the height of the silo at 9 inches in the design.
The height of the real structure is going to be 45 ft.
a) What scale factor is used for the reduction? What is the scale ratio of the design?
b) If the diameter of the real structure will be 20 ft wide, how wide will this be shown in the design in
inches?
c) What will the volume of the real structure be? (Volume of a cylinder is r 2 h )
