Chapter 5-12
Zero-Product Property: If ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0
Examples:
1. Solve (x + 2)(x – 5) = 0
x+2=0
x = -2
x–5=0
- Set both factors equal to zero.
x=5
- Solve for x.
Solution set: (-2, 5) - Answer
2. Solve 3n(n – 8)(2n + 1) = 0
3n = 0
n–8=0
n=0
n=8
2n + 1 = 0
n = -1/2
- Set all factors equal to zero.
- Solve for x.
Solution = 0, 8, -1/2
3. Solve 2x 2 + 5x = 12
2x 2 + 5x – 12 = 0
(2x – 3)(x + 4)
2x – 3 = 0
