at UH Geauga Medical Center
Groundbreaking on October 27, 2016
CHARDON, Ohio - University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at UH Geauga Medical Center will
celebrate a groundbreaking on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 5 pm.
This new expansion at UH Geauga Medical Center will provide additional space for patients who
need infusion therapy services. Scheduled to open in the 3rd quarter of 2017, the future 11,500square-foot, $4.8 million expansion at the Chardon-based hospital will blend the latest technology
with comfortable furnishings and amenities to provide an optimal healing environment for patients
and their families.
“Offering a wide range of cancer care services is a priority at UH Geauga Medical Center,” said M.
Steven Jones, President, UH Geauga Medical Center. “We offer comprehensive services within the
community, minimizing the need for long-distance travel. The UH Seidman Cancer Center at UH
Geauga Medical Center continues to provide patients with access to the nation’s best experts,
advanced treatments and leading-edge technology – all close to home.”
The UH Seidman Cancer Center at UH Geauga Medical Center provides infusion therapy, surgical
services, radiation oncology, rehabilitation and a dedicated cancer patient navigator. Infusion
services at UH Geauga Medical Center include intravenous (IV) chemotherapy, red/white blood cell
growth factor injections, blood transfusions and IV antibiotics, among other services.
Additional amenities in this new facility will include a spacious waiting area, family consultation room
and an education center. It will be adjacent UH Geauga Medical Center’s state-of-the-art radiation
therapy facility, opened in 2012.
“Our cancer program continues to grow and we have expanded our facilities and offerings three
times since 2008 to meet the increased need for cancer care services,” said Judah Friedman, MD,
medical oncologist at UH Geauga Medical Center. “This new infusion facility will improve access to
comprehensive treatment for Geauga-area residents.”
Physicians and other clinical staff at UH Geauga Medical Center work in partnership with their
colleagues at the nationally renowned UH Seidman Cancer Center, based at UH Cleveland Medical
Center in University Circle. Patients at UH Seidman Cancer Center locations throughout Northern
Ohio may participate in clinical trials, in which newly developed cancer-fighting therapies are
introduced to patients prior to becoming available anywhere else.
UH Seidman Cancer Center is part of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer
Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, one of only 47 in the country. Named in
recognition of a $42 million gift from Jane and Lee Seidman, UH Seidman Cancer Center opened a
new cancer hospital at UH Cleveland Medical Center in 2011 that provides highly specialized cancer
care for patients. UH Seidman Cancer Center is recognized by US News & World Report as one of
the top hospitals for cancer care in the country.
As part of its commitment to leading-edge care, UH Seidman Cancer Center recently opened the
first Proton Therapy Center in Ohio. Located at UH Cleveland Medical Center, the new Proton
Therapy Center offers an advanced form of radiation therapy for adults and children with specific
types of cancer. Proton therapy is a highly advanced technique that allows radiation oncologists to
target tumors with the maximum cancer-destroying capabilities of radiation while decreasing the
dose to surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
UH Geauga Medical Center has invested significantly in recent years to upgrade its services based
on growing community needs. Since 2005, the hospital has completed major emergency center and
surgery center expansions, opened a Center for Spine and Orthopedics, and expanded key UH
services into Geauga County including UH Seidman Cancer Center, UH Harrington Heart &
Vascular Institute and UH Neurological Institute.
UH Geauga Medical Center is located at 13207 Ravenna Road, Chardon, Ohio 44024.
