Objective: piece together how tensions in the Balkans affected the causes of World
War I
World War I- Alliances Galore!!
You DO NOT need to google, yahoo, or use any other search engines online
besides the links that are provided for you. We did the work… the answers
are there, you just need to trust us and look around!!
1. What was going on in the Ottoman Empire during the late 1800’s- early 1900’s?
What caused this? What types of nationalities were involved?
2. Places in the Balkan Peninsula (such as Bosnia) were still being controlled by
Austria-Hungary. How did this create further tension in the Balkans? Which
specific group hated Austrian presence in the Balkans?
3. What is ‘Pan-Slavism’? Where in Europe do some of these “Slavic” groups live?
How did Pan-Slavism contribute to tension in the Balkans? (this one is
IMPORTANT!!) How does this involve a nation like Russia in the “Balkan Powder
Keg?”
4. Check out a vintage video of Franz Ferdinand’s funeral. What type of person do
you think he was?
5. What happened on June 28th, 1914 in Bosnia? What was the name of the Serbian
who committed the crime? What terrorist group did he belong to & what were their
beliefs? What did Austria-Hungary do in reaction to this crime?
6. Austria-Hungary’s reactions caused a declaration of war “domino effect” in
Europe. Go to the PBS website then maps & battles link then Europe in 1914 to
see how this “domino effect” plays out. Record what happens in your own words…

REFLECTION:
1. Map AssignmentYou are to use the blank map given to you. Color in the nations belonging to the
Central Powers in Red, the Allies in Blue, and the neutral nations in Green. Each
nation needs to be labeled. This will count as two p&p assignments.
2. If you had control of a nation in Europe during WWI (lets say, “Your Nameia”)
which side would you join, and why? Think strategy here.
