Orbital time periods: know the orbital time periods of each planet, whose
rotations/orbits are the shortest and longest (use handout I gave you)
Meteor: a lump of a rock or metal that sometimes enter the Earth’s atmosphere. If they
do enter the atmosphere they burn up. A shooting star is really a meteor burning up in
the Earth’s atmosphere. A meteor never reaches the ground.
Meteorite: A meteor that reaches the ground without burning up completely in the
Earth’s atmosphere. Meteorites are meteors that have made impact with Earth’s
surface.
Asteroid: Enormous rocks or boulders that revolve around the Sun, usually between the
orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They are different from comets in that they have no tails.
Comet: Small frozen masses of dust, ice, gas, and other materials that travel a definite
path through the solar system. They slowly orbit the Sun. As they pass near the Sun,
they are vaporized, leaving trails that resemble hair.
