Mitosis Question Sheet
1. Why is cell division important?
2. What must happen in a nucleus before it can undergo mitosis?
3. Explain the purpose of mitosis.
4. Briefly describe the stages of mitosis. In which stage are there two
nuclei?
5. Why is creating an identical pair of the nuclear material (DNA)
necessary before cell division occurs?
6. A normal human cell has 46 chromosomes. After the cell has
undergone mitosis, how many chromosomes would you expect to
find in each cell?
7. How do the new cells formed during cell division compare to the
initial cell?
8. X-rays and other forms of high-energy radiation can break
chromosomes apart. Physicians and dentists ask women if they
are pregnant before taking X-rays. Why don’t they want to X-ray
a pregnant woman?
9. Why do you think that plant root tips were used for viewing cell
division?
10. Mitosis is described in stages because this makes it easier to talk
about, but the cells do not stop between each of the stages. What
observations have you made that suggest that mitosis is a
continuing process?
