Solar System Notes
Pg. 192-198
What is our solar system?
A solar system is made up of a STAR and
the objects moving around it.
A planet = a large body of rock or gas with
a nearly-round shape that revolves (or moves)
around a star.
All planets:
1.) rotate (turn)
2.) orbit (revolve in a nearly circular path)
The earth takes 365 days (1 Year) to
complete one orbit around the sun.
*The farther away a planet is from the
sun, the longer the orbit. (makes a wider circle)
Planets DO NOT make their own light.
Sunlight reflects off the planets.
What are the inner and outer
planets?
The four planets closest to the sun are
called the inner planets.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars




Smallest planets
Solid
Made of rocky material
Warmer (because closer to the sun)
The four plants farthest from the Sun are
called the outer planets.
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
 “gas giants”
 made of gas
 Jupiter is the LARGEST planet
**See page 194-195 for pictures and more details!
Order of Planets from Sun:
(closest) Mercury- Venus- Earth- MarsJupiter- Saturn- Uranus- Neptune
(furthest)
Moon
What are other objects in our solar
system like?
Planet
Moons:
 Moon = an object that revolves around
a planet.
 Some planets have 0, 1 or many moons
 No water or living things
 Moon’s surface is covered with craters
(hollow ground or pits)
The Sun:
 Sun = a star at the center of OUR solar
system.
 Star = ball of hot, glowing gases
 Temperature inside the sun = 15 million
degrees Celsius
 Provides the heat the Earth needs to
survive!
What else is in our solar system?
*pictures on pg. 198
Asteroids - chunks of rock or metal
Comets - mostly ice mixed with bits of rock
or dust (have long, narrow orbits)
Meteors - small pieces of metal or rock that
have broken off from comets or asteroids.
Star
