II. COURSE DESCRIPTION (Catalog Description): This course focuses on the brief expressive composition. Students write primarily narration and
description based on observations of people, places, and things. In addition, they write reactions to brief reading selections. Some features of
English B are focused journal writing, a learning tool that can be used in other courses; individualized instruction in sentence and word skills;
assignments in critical thinking skills; and exercises in the elements of a composition. 3 units; 2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab

IV. EL CAMINO COLLEGE COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn the following—
A. Read and apply critical thinking skills to pre-collegiate texts for the purposes of writing and discussion.
B. Apply appropriate strategies from the writing process to create, compose, revise, and edit drafts.
C. Demonstrate ability to participate in draft-review activities, such as peer review and one-on-one tutorials.
D. Plan, write, and revise paragraphs based on personal experience and observations, including a topic sentence and supporting details, and
avoiding grammatical and mechanical errors that interfere with meaning.
E. Write and revise summaries of, and personal responses to, short magazine or newspaper articles.
F. Compose a variety of sentence types and edit them for correct grammar, appropriate word choice, and accurate spelling..
V. EL CAMINO COLLEGE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME:
Upon completion of the course, the students should demonstrate the following skill- Write a brief descriptive, reflective, or narrative paragraph(s) that has gone through multiple revisions and responds to a text previously
discussed in class. The paragraph(s) should provide readers with a thesis that makes a clear point and provides supporting details. It
should be logically organized and focused. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure should not impede comprehension.
VI. ASSESSMENT:
The following activities will be used to assess mastery of student learning outcomes:
A. Sentence skills—lab work, textbook exercises, quizzes, midterm, and final
B. Word, writing, and critical thinking skills—reading journal, journal activities, prewriting activities, and typed writing assignments
VII. EVALUATION CRITERIA AND GRADING SCALE:
English B is a CR/ NC course and CR (credit) is based on successful completion of course work with a “C” grade or higher. (Grading Scale for
assignments and the course: 90-100%=A; 80-89%=B; 70-79%=C; 60-69%=D; etc.)

VIII. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
A. Tardy Policy—Three tardies is an absence.
B. Absence Policy—You may be dropped from the course if you miss 10% of the semester meetings or more than 3 class meetings. You will have
an attendance grade of 3 points per day for arriving on time and completing all the assignments on time; 2 points if you are late but
complete all assignments; 1 point for incomplete work; and 0 points if you are absent.
IX. STATEMENT OF STUDENT CONDUCT:
College policies apply-A. Instructor expectation of student conduct: Students are expected to have class textbook materials each day and work constructively—both
collaboratively and individually—on assignments. Ear buds and cell phones are not permitted during class.
B. Late/Missed assignment policy: Class assignments not completed and graded in class are considered late assignments and receive one
quarter credit. Homework assignments not completed by the due date are considered late and receive one quarter credit. Writing assignments
marked “revise” must be improved for better word usage, structure, organization, support, and/or development of ideas within one week;
consultation with a tutor in F39 is strongly recommended in such cases.
C. Academic conduct, cheating, plagiarism: Plagiarism and cheating results in a failing grade on the assignment or test, with expulsion possible
for repeated offenses under due process (Catalog, p. 270)
D. Lab Policies: Students should cooperatively adhere to policies of labs in F33 and G33 where wonderful tutoring and computer privileges are
available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
X. SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS:
If you have a recognized disability, notify the Office of Student Disabilities (F10) and me within the first couple days of class so that reasonable
arrangements can be made.
XI. DISCLAIMER STATEMENT:
Students will be notified ahead of time when and if any changes are made to course requirements or policies.
XII. SEMESTER SCHEDULE OF TOPICS AND ASSIGNMENTS ON VOICE-Note on Assignments: Assignments must be completed on standard paper and graded in class. They are due on the day assigned; otherwise, they
receive quarter credit. Additionally, there may be supplemental assignments. Finally, writing assignments should be double-spaced in MLA format.
Note on Thesaurus Usage: Select words understudy (such as verbs or nouns or adjectives and find stronger alternatives in the thesaurus)
Note on Lab hours: Do ½ hour per day on the topic for that day, such as verbs, conjunctions, or spelling.
Note on Journal: Write practice sentences of approximately 10-15 words each, usually about the reading or Service Learning “Twitter” at Etudes.
Note on Typed Assignments: These are graded on word usage, grammar, punctuation, logical organization, and critical thinking.
Note on Portfolio: Every assignment along with quizzes should be saved in folder to record progress.

FINAL PORTFOLIO PROJECT:
Students are required to revise and edit all thematic typed assignments about various aspects of communication, which are completed throughout
the course by due dates. Students are required to number each line of their compositions and make annotated changes explaining why each change
is made, such as for improved spelling, subject/verb agreement, verb tense, supporting details, organization of details, punctuation, and more. Final
revised and edited typed drafts need to be produced for submission. The final copies of the four typed assignments will be kept by the instructor for
holistic evaluation of the each student’s writing abilities.
