Rules for Integers
Adding Integers with the same sign:
1. add the absolute value of the two numbers
2. positive + positive = positive
3. negative + negative = negative
Examples:
2+7=9
-2 + -7 = -9
Adding Integers with different signs:
1. subtract the number with the smaller absolute value from the number with the
larger absolute value
2. the sum of these numbers takes the sign of the number with the larger absolute
value
Examples:
10 + -11 = -1
-10 + 11 = 1
Subtracting Integers:
1. change the subtracting sign to addition and change the sign of the second number
2. follow the rules for adding integers
Multiplying & Dividing Integers:
1. multiply or divide the absolute value of the two numbers
2. two numbers with the same sign = positive
3. two numbers with the same sign = negative
Examples:
5 x 2 = 10
-5 x -2 = 10
5 x -2 = -10
-5 x 2 = -10
