CH.10 CELL GROWTH & DIVISION
Cell Growth
“Cells don’t just grow, they divide”
Limits to Cell Growth:
1. Puts more demands on DNA
Ex: Library in a growing town.
2. More trouble with moving nutrients
and wastes across the cell membrane.
Ex: SA:V ratio
Cell Division:
1. Before a cell becomes too large, a
growing cell divides into 2 daughter
cells.
2. Before a cell divides, the cell
replicates (copies) all of its DNA so that
each daughter cell has its own
complete set.
Ex/ Each 1 gets its own library
Q’s
1. Give two reasons why cells divide?
2. How is a cell’s DNA like the books in
a library?
Chromosomes:
Carries DNA and proteins
- The cells of every organism have a
specific number of chromosomes
(humans = )
Chromosome
DNA
double
helix
Proteins
- Each chromosome consists of 2
identical “sister” chromatids.
- Each
pair
of
chromatids
are
connected by a centromere.
- Chromosomes are only visible right
before cell division.
The Cell Cycle –
Interphase:
The “in between” period before a cell
divides; also the longest phase. (3 Phases:
G1, S, G2)
G1 Phase – the cell grows
S Phase – the cell synthesizes and
replicates DNA
G2 Phase – the cell organizes organelles
for cell division. “Gets ready”.
Cell Division – the division of the cell
M Phase – mitosis and cytokinesis
occurs
Mitosis – the cell’s nucleus divides
Cytokinesis – the cell’s cytoplasm splits
and pinches apart
Mitosis – The division of the cell nucleus
occurs in 4 parts:
o Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase,
Telophase

1) Name the main events of the cell
cycle.
