Semester Outline 1. Numbers A. Whole Numbers and Integers This semester, grade 5 students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers up to thousands and ten thousands. They will estimate the result of a mathematical operation. They will also be introduced to the characteristics of mathematical operations, which are commutative, associative, and distributive. Integers can also be called as positive and negative numbers. Positive numbers are numbers that are greater than zero. Negative numbers are numbers that are less than zero. Zero is neither positive nor negative. Students will use number lines and counters to understand integers. B. Prime Factorization in Least Common Multiple (LCM) and Greatest Common Factors (GCF) Students will enhance their understanding about LCM and GCF by using prime factorization. It means that students will use prime numbers to determine the LCM and GCF of a number. C. Square and Square Roots Square is our next focus. It is given as the continuation of the previous lesson, which is multiplication. Some examples of the operations are as follow: 12 = 1 x 1 = 1, 22 = 2 x 2 = 4, up to 102 = 10 x 10 = 100. To be able to do the operations more easily, students have to remember the square of 1 to ten. Of course, finding them will be easily done when students have remembered the square of 1 to 10. Finding the square root of numbers more than 100, however, will be learned by using the regular division. 2. Fraction, Decimals, Percentage, and Ratio A. Fraction, Decimals, and Percentage Fraction is used for expressing number parts of a whole. There are four types of fractions that will be learned: common fraction, mixed fraction, decimal, percentage, and ratio. The material activities that will be learned in this scope are: Changing fraction forms Students will learn to change: a. common fraction -- mixed fraction b. common fraction -- decimal c. common fraction -- percentage d. decimal fraction -- percentage e. percentage -- decimal Comparing the value of fraction Students will compare the value of: a. common fraction >< common fraction b. common fraction >< mixed fraction and other types of fraction with their value Operating Fractions a. Adding Fraction Students will learn how to add several types of fraction such as common fraction + common fraction with equal numerator and denominator, common fraction + mixed fraction with different numerator and denominator, mixed fraction + decimal, and decimal + percentage. b. Subtracting Fraction Students will learn to subtract several types of fraction such as common fraction – common fraction with different numerator and denominator, common fraction – mixed fraction, common fraction – decimal, and decimal – percentage. c. Multiplying Fraction Students will learn to multiply several types of fraction such as common fraction x common fraction with different numerator and denominator, common MADANIA ● Elementary School ● Middle School ● Senior High School Telaga Kahuripan, Parung, Bogor – 16330 +62.251.602777 +62.251.604777 www.madania.net [email protected] fraction x mixed fraction, common fraction x decimal, and decimal x percentage d. Dividing Fraction Students will learn to divide several types of fraction such as common fraction : common fraction with different numerator and denominator, common fraction : mixed fraction, common fraction : decimal, decimal : percentage. B. Ratio A ratio is a comparison of one number to another. Students will learn it through having cookery. They will also learn the relationship between ratio and scale, which is the ratio of any length on the drawing and its counterparts in a model. Urthermore, it will be learned in second semester that is related to geotopia project. II. Lesson Objectives 1. Numbers Through this course, students will: - compute with whole numbers and its characters, round off, and estimate - perform calculations of whole numbers using its characteristics (commutative, associative, and distributive), round numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds and estimating - use prime factorization to determine LCM and GCF of 3 numbers of ones or tens - apply mix operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) of whole numbers - calculate root and exponent 2. Fraction, Decimals, Percentage, and Ratio Through this course, students will: - understand how to convert fraction into decimal and percentage - be able to add and subtract fraction, percentage, and decimal - be able to multiply and divide fraction - apply fraction on ratio and scale III. Course Expectation Students are expected to attend all classes and take responsibility for learning the material/information presented during classes. Students are expected to be fully prepared with all necessary materials to participate in individual, group, and whole class activities and discussion. Students may receive a reduced grade for poor, incomplete, or late assignments Students should have read the materials before they attend a class. Before a lesson begins, students should have read the materials at home (according to the student’s level) V.
