One Step Equations
To undo addition, subtract the number from both sides of the equal sign
Ex: x + 4 = 9
10 = r + 6
-4 -4
-6
-6
x = 5
4 = r
_______________________________________________________________
To undo subtraction, add the number to both sides of the equal sign
Ex: x – 7 = 12
-5 = r – 2
-8 + x = 12
+7 +7
+2
+2
+8
+8
x = 19
-3 = r
x = 20
_______________________________________________________________
To undo multiplication, divide the number on both sides
Ex: 3x = 9
3
3
-48 = -6x
-6
-6
x=3
8=x
______________________________________________________________
To undo division, multiply the number on both sides of the equal sign
Ex: x = 9
4
-2 = a
7
x =9 (4)
-2(7) = a
x = 36
-14 = a
______________________________________________________________
To undo fractions: multiply both sides by the denominator. Then divide by the coefficient of the variable.

Combining Like Terms
To combine like terms, you must combine like terms on each side of the equal sign.
Examples:
1) 9x – 2 – 7x = 18
so, 2x – 2 = 18
+2 +2
so, 2x = 20
2
2
Combine 9x – 7x = 2x, then bring everything else down
Then undo subtraction
Then undo multiplication
so, x = 10
46
2) 8x + 12 – 28 = -64
Combine 12 – 28 = -16, bring everything else down
so, 8x – 16 = -64
+ 16 +16
Then undo subtraction
so, 8x = -48
8
8
Then undo multiplication
so, x = -6
Try these:
1) 7x – 5x + 4 = 26
2) 24 + 3x – 6 = 9
3) 10 = -7x + 25 + 2x
Distributing
To distribute, multiply the number in front of the parenthesis to each of the terms inside the parenthesis
Examples: Distribute
1) 3(x – 4)
(Multiply 3 times x, and multiply 3 times -4)
2) -6(3x – 4)
3x – 12
-18x + 24
Solve the following:
3) 6(x + 5) = -54
4) -2(4x + 8) = 24
5) -8(3x + 6) + 22x = 32
so, 6x + 30 = -54
-30 - 30
so, -8x – 16 = 24
+ 16 +16
so, -24x – 48 + 22x = 32
so, 6x = -84
6
6
so, -8x = 40
-8
-8
so, x = -14
so, x = -5
so, -2x – 48 = 32
+ 48 +48
so, -2x = 80
-2
-2
so, x = -40
Try these:
1) 5(x – 7) = 30
2) -3(x – 6) = 12
3) -7(2x + 2) + 42 = 28
47
Variables on Both Sides
When there are variable on both sides of the equal sign,
then move the smaller variable by adding or subtracting its opposite
Example:
1) 5x + 9 = 3x – 7
-3x
-3x
2) -6x – 8 = 2x + 16
+6x
+6x
Subtract the smaller variable
2x + 9 = -7
- 9 -9
-8 = 8x + 16
-16
- 16
2x = -16
2
2
- 24 = 8x
8
8
x = -8
-3 = x
Try these:
1) 7x + 10 = 5x – 22
2) 3x + 14 = -4x – 28
Multi-step Equations
Example:
10 – 2(4x +12) = -6x + 4
1) If there are parentheses present, then distribute
10 – 8x – 24 = -6x + 4
2) Combine like terms on each side of the equal sign
-8x – 14 = -6x + 4
+8x
+8x
3) If there are variables (letters) on both sides,
then move the smaller variable by adding or
subtracting its opposite.
4) Undo addition or subtraction
-14 = 2x + 4
-4
-4
-18 = 2x

5) Undo multiplication or division
-9 = x

Special Solutions for Solving Equations
When the variable are eliminated:
1) Get a solution where a number = itself
Ex 7 = 7
- This is called an identity
- This means that there is infinite solutions
Ex: 2x – 7 + 4 = 2x – 3
Combine like terms
2x – 3 = 2x – 3
- 2x
- 2x
-3 = -3
Variables on both sides
The equations is an identity
OR
2) Get a solution where a number = another number Ex: 5 = 8
- This means that there are no solutions
EX:
3(x – 4) = 3x + 10
Distribute
3x – 12 = 3x + 10
-3x
-3x
-12 = 10
1) 5x + 17 = 4 + 5x
Variables on both sides
The equation has no solution
2) 3(x + 4) = 5x – 2x + 12
60

There are 3 possible outcomes:
1) Solution (ex: x = 5)
2) Identity
3) No solution
1) -20 = -4x – 6x
2) 2p + 10 = 10 + 2p
4) 5x – 3x = 2x + 7
5) 8x – 20 = 2(4x – 10)
