Atmospheric phenomena. Weather and climate. Weather and climate Weather consists of day-to-day and week-to-week changes in the atmosphere. We notice it as sunshine, cloud cover, temperature, wind, rain or the lack thereof, frost, snow and ice. It affects our daily lives, whether we are planning a picnic or piloting a jetliner through a storm. Climate is patterns of weather over the longer term--years and decades and centuries. The climate determines which kinds of plants and animals live where, and the crops we grow in different seasons. In short: Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a precise moment and in a specific place. However, climate is the average weather of a given place over a long period of time. Meteorology is the science which Studies weather and atmospheric conditions. To investigate atmospheric conditions, meteorologists measure parameters such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind direction and Speedy, the humedity of the air and the volumen of precipitación per m2. Different instruments are used to measure each parameter: - a barometer measures atmospheric pressure. - A thermometer measures temperature. - A weather vane shows the direccion of wind, and a anemometer measures wind Speedy. - A hygrometer measures air humedity. - A rain gauge measures the volumen of rain per m2. Wind We cannot see the wind, but we can feel it. Wind is the air in motion. It is formed when the sun heats the surface of the Earth. Some parts of the Earth get direct rays from the sun and are always warm. Other areas receive less sun and so they are colder. As the surface of the Earth gets Warner, the air becomes warmer too. Warm air is Fighter than cold air andi t rises.. As it moves upwards, it creates ana rea of low pressure. Cooler air moves in and replaces the warmer air. This movement o fair makes the wind blow. Winds have different directions and speeds. When the wind is Fast, we call it a gale or windstorm, but it blows slowly, we call it a breeze. A sea breeze is created when the sun heats up the land next to the sea. The air above the land becomes warm and rises, and cooler air from above the sea is pulled in to replace the warm air. At night, the opposite happens – the air above the land cools faster than the air above the sea. The warm air above the sea rises and pulls in cooler air from tha land. This is called a land breeze. Wind energy is the fastest growing source of electricity in the World. It is cheap and clean because it doesn´t create dangerous waste products. Precipitation When water vapour present in the air cools, it condenses and form clouds. Clouds are formed by thousands of microscopic props. Of water or little crystals of ice. When the dropllets of water join toghether to make big, heavy props of water, they fall in the form of rain. Hail is precipitación which is made up of balls of ice called hailstones. The weather map Isobars are lines that link all the points on a weather map wich have the same pressure at a given moment. The unit of pressure used is the hectpascal (hPa) or the millibar (mb). Depressions are areas of lower pressure, normally associated with bad weather, rain or snow. Anti-cyclones (A) are areas of high pressure associated with good weather. Answer the following question: 1.- Underline the unknown words and make a list with them classifying in nouns, adjectives and verbs. 2.- What are words of the previous list related to the unit 5? 3.- What is the difference between climate and weather? 4.- What are parameters measure by meteorologists to investigate atmospheric conditions? 5.- Name different instruments whic are used to measure the previous parameters. 6.- What is the wind?. 7.- How are the clouds formed? 8.- What are isobars? And depressions? And anti-cyclones? Activity 2nd: Look at this conceptual map of the unit 5. Do it in English. Activity 3rd: Write the name of each instrument and what it measures: Activity 4th: Explain to a partner what the different forms of precipitación are and how they are formed. Activity 5th: Look at the map: a) b) c) d) Above which country is the area of low pressure located? Where would an area of high pressure be located? To which continente is the cold front moving? And the hot front? Will there be clear skies in Spain, or on the contrary, is there a risk of precipitation? e) Where will the strongest wind be experience, Spain or Italy? Activity 6th: A meterological phenomenon that you probably have observed is the rainbow. Investigate how rainbows are formed. Activity 7th: Reading: Earth in Trouble! Destruction of the Ozone Layer: The ozone layer, which is located in the stratosphere, acts as a protective filter of solar radiation so that the most harmful solar rays, ultraviolet rays, do not reach the Earth´s surface in large quantities. Currently, the ozone layer is being destroyed, which will have grave consequences for living beings: an increase in skin cancer, irritation of the eyes, cataracts, blindness, allergies, and infectious diseases. The part of the ozone layer that is most affected is above Antartica, where the hole in the ozone layer is located. The principle culprits of the destruction of the ozone layer are the CFCs (chloroflourocarbon gases). The ultraviolet rays of the sun liberate the chlorine contained in the CFCs, which transforms the ozone into oxygen. The CFCs are used normally as cooling fluids in refrigerators and air conditioners, and in aerosols. The Greenhouse Effect: Water vapor and carbon dioxide allow solar rays to escape out of the atmosphere, but rays that originate from the Earth´s surface are reflected and returned back to Earth. Water vapor and carbon dioxide behave the same as the glass of a greenhouse, maintaining the heat inside. For this reason, this effect is called the Greenhouse Effect. If a natural greenhouse effect did not exist, the planet would be frozen and the temperature would be -18C. The Danger of the Increase of the Greenhouse Effect: The greenhouse effect has intensified considerably during the 20th Century due to two fundamental causes: -The creation of large amounts of carbon dioxide due to the combustion of petroleum derivatives. -The destruction of large areas of forest, which could have consumed the excess carbon dioxide produced. The direct consequence of the increase in greenhouse gases is an overall increase in the global temperature (Global Warming). This increase also has other consequences: -An increase in the sea level due to the melting of the polar ice, which will flood coastal areas , destroying cities and agricultural lands. Also, fresh water reserves will be contaminated with sea water. -The amount of wind and rain will also increase due to the increase in evaporation rate. On one hand, the desertification of many areas of the planet will increase and, on the other hand, other areas will experience torrential rains. -The disappearance of many species of plants and animals. -The appearance of many plagues and the propagation of tropical diseases. Answer the following questions: 1. Which layer of the atmosphere protects us from the most harmful rays of the sun? 2. Which type of gas destroys the ozone layer? 3. What are the consequences of the destruction of the ozone layer for living beings? 4. Explain what the natural greenhouse effect consists of. 5. What are the fundamental causes of the intensification of the greenhouse effect in the 20th Century? 6. What is the principle consequence of the greenhouse effect? 7. Make a list in which appears words related to the unit 5. Classify them in nouns, adjectives and verbs.
