ANIMAL BLOoD PRODUcTs
SSI Diagnostica produces blood and serum from horses,
cattle, sheep, and rabbits. Blood or serum is an important
supplement to many culture media, which are used for microbiological diagnostics and control. It contains essential
growth factors and plays an important role in identification
and differentiation between bacteria of clinical relevance to
humans and animals.
Animal Welfare
The blood is collected from our own donor herd of healthy,
non-medicated horses, cattle, sheep and rabbits. The donor
animals are kept in large socialized groups and housed in
large in-door free-range stables with free access to a
large outdoor area and pastures in summer. The health and
welfare of the animals are closely supervised by SSI Diagnostica veterinarians.
Donor animal bleeding is licensed in accordance with the
legislation concerning animal experimentation.
The stabling conditions and the use of the animals are in
accordance with the requirements in the EU ”Directive on
Animal Experimentation”, and the EU ”Directive on Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes”.
Quality
The quality control system for production of animal blood
products is certified according to DS/EN ISO 9001:2008
and DS/EN ISO 13485:2012. Blood products which form part
of culture media or analyses for human diagnostics are
CE-marked. Blood from horses, cattle, and sheep is collected and treated aseptically.
From all lots of donor blood, a sample is tested by cultivating it for 48 hours in a medium suitable for detection of
bacteria and fungi in blood cultures. This ensures that the
product has not been microbiologically contaminated. When
growing reference organisms in various culture media, the
growth stimulating and hemolytical characteristics are
controlled.
