AP Biology - Mitosis and Meiosis Experiments
Experiment 1 – Mitosis
1. Observe prepared slides of onion root tips up to 400x magnification.
2. Observe at least 200 different cells in the apical meristem region.
3. Catagorize each cell as to the cell cycle phase (Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase,
Anaphase, Telophase, Cytokinesis).
4. Calculate the percentage of cells in each phase and the time (in minutes) that the
onion cells are in each phase to accurately describe the cell cycle of onion apical
meristem cells.
5. Repeat this process for the prepared slides of fish blastula cells.
6. Compare and contrast the cell cycles and definitive conditions of the plant and
animal cells.
Experiment 2 – Meiosis
1. Using the Ward’s micrographs of Sordaria fimicola perithecium, categorize at
least 50 different asci as to those that demonstrate crossover and those that do not.
2. Determine the distance between the gene for spore color and the centromere in
map units.
3. Describe the process of meiotic spore production in Sordaria fimicola, the
crossover percentage, and the relationship of the locus of the gene for spore color
to the crossover percentage.
