Rocks and Minerals: Test
I.
Objectives Identify that the lithosphere contains rocks and minerals and that minerals
make up rocks. Describe how rocks and minerals are formed and/or classified.
II.
Vocabulary
Rock – a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter
Rock Cycle – the series of processes in which a rock forms, changes from one type to
another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological processes
Erosion – the process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from
one location to another
Deposition- the process in which material is laid down
Composition- the chemical makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or other materials
in the rock
Texture – the quality of a rock that is based on he sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock’s
grains
Classification – grouping items by their properties
Intrusive igneous rock – rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the
Earth’s surface
Extrusive igneous rock – rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth’s
surface
Sedimentary rock – grains of sediment that have been compacted and cemented together
Stratification – the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranges in layers
Organic Sedimentary Rocks - once living plants and animals that have been compacted and
cemented together
Chemical Sedimentary Rock – crystallized minerals that have been formed by dissolved
minerals and water.
Metamorphic Rock – rock that has been changed by heat and pressure from their original
form, into rock with new minerals and/or structures

Safety Precautions
Push in chairs when leaving
Do not lean back on chairs
Keep all hands and materials to yourself
VI.
Instruction
-Anticipatory Set
Use the Smartboard to go through the interactive flashcard review from the website. Call on
students to explain each term. Go over any questions that the students may have.
-Step-by-Step Description
1. Pass out the test and go over the directions.
2. Allow the students to work on the test for the remainder of class.
3. Students are permitted to read a book silently after finishing their test.
VII.
Diversity Strategies
Academic – learning disabled students have the option of going to the resource room to have
the test read to them.
Cultural/Racial – the test is deigned to be free of cultural bias
Gender – Call on males and females evenly, and give each an equal amount of response time.
VIII.
Assessment Technique
Immediate
Grade Selected problems from each section to ensure that each student understands how
rocks and minerals are formed and classified. # 2, 4, 10-12, and 14
Summative
Grade entire test: 25 points possible
