Geology: 7th grade Rocks and Minerals: Test I. Objectives Identify that the lithosphere contains rocks and minerals and that minerals make up rocks. Describe how rocks and minerals are formed and/or classified. II. Vocabulary Rock – a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter Rock Cycle – the series of processes in which a rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological processes Erosion – the process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another Deposition- the process in which material is laid down Composition- the chemical makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or other materials in the rock Texture – the quality of a rock that is based on he sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock’s grains Classification – grouping items by their properties Intrusive igneous rock – rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth’s surface Extrusive igneous rock – rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth’s surface Sedimentary rock – grains of sediment that have been compacted and cemented together Stratification – the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranges in layers Organic Sedimentary Rocks - once living plants and animals that have been compacted and cemented together Chemical Sedimentary Rock – crystallized minerals that have been formed by dissolved minerals and water. Metamorphic Rock – rock that has been changed by heat and pressure from their original form, into rock with new minerals and/or structures III. Materials Needed Test IV. Technology Component Flashcard Review http://www.quia.com/jfc/451224.html http://www.learner.org/interactives/rockcycle/ http://www.tki.org.nz/r/wick_ed/science/rock.php V. Safety Precautions Push in chairs when leaving Do not lean back on chairs Keep all hands and materials to yourself VI. Instruction -Anticipatory Set Use the Smartboard to go through the interactive flashcard review from the website. Call on students to explain each term. Go over any questions that the students may have. -Step-by-Step Description 1. Pass out the test and go over the directions. 2. Allow the students to work on the test for the remainder of class. 3. Students are permitted to read a book silently after finishing their test. VII. Diversity Strategies Academic – learning disabled students have the option of going to the resource room to have the test read to them. Cultural/Racial – the test is deigned to be free of cultural bias Gender – Call on males and females evenly, and give each an equal amount of response time. VIII. Assessment Technique Immediate Grade Selected problems from each section to ensure that each student understands how rocks and minerals are formed and classified. # 2, 4, 10-12, and 14 Summative Grade entire test: 25 points possible Name____________________Class_______ Rocks and Minerals Test 1. List the four characteristics that define a mineral. 2. Explain how to test the following classifying properties. Hardness: Cleavage/Fracture: Streak: 3. Explain why grass cannot be a mineral. Match the term from the right column to the correct description in the left column. 4. _____ Process other than heat that metamorphism causes metamorphism 5. _____ Metamorphic rock in which metamorphism mineral grains are arranged in bands 6. _____ Result of large pieces of rock foliated deep within the Earth’s crust colliding 7. _____ Result of rock being near magma a. regional b. contact c. non- d. pressure 8. _____ Metamorphic rock in which e. foliated mineral grains are NOT arranged in bands Circle the best answer. 9. Igneous rock is formed from cooled and solidified ______________. 15. ______________ igneous rocks are formed at or near the Earth’s surface and form ___________ crystals. 16. ______________ igneous rocks are formed deep beneath the surface of the Earth and form ___________ crystals. Directions: Below is a diagram of the rock cycle. In the ovals, write the type of rock (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous) that is formed from the previous process. In the rectangles, write the process that occurs to form the following type of rock. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture. Geology Humor: What do you call a can of pop found in a conglomerate rock? Answer: Coca Cola Clastic! Name____________________Class_______ Rocks and Minerals Test 1. Explain why grass cannot be a mineral. 1 point Grass is made from organic material, and does not have a crystalline structure. 2. Explain how to test the following classifying properties. 3 points Hardness: Scratch the mineral with a reference mineral from Mohs Hardness Scale Cleavage/Fracture: Break the rock and observe its edges Streak: Scratch the mineral against a streak plate to observe the powder 3. List the four characteristics that define a mineral. 1 point Formed in nature solid Made from non-living material crystalline structure Match the term from the right column to the correct description in the left column. 4. _____ Process other than heat that metamorphism causes metamorphism 5. _____ Metamorphic rock in which metamorphism mineral grains are arranged in bands 6. _____ Result of large pieces of rock foliated deep within the Earth’s crust colliding 7. _____ Result of rock being near magma a. regional b. contact c. non- d. pressure 8. _____ Metamorphic rock in which e. pressure mineral grains are NOT arranged in bands Circle the best answer. 9 The process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers. a. organic b. weathering c. stratification d. erosion 10.
