Study Tips
1. Make flash cards and have someone quiz you.
2. Use your book to find pictures of any of the terms.
3. Each night study 4-5 terms or ideas.
4. Know the examples for terms.
Know the following terms:
Species- All the members of a population
Ecosystem- An area in which living and nonliving things interact.
Competition- When organisms compete for resources, like food, water or shelter, within
an ecosystem.
Consumer- A living thing that obtains energy by eating other living things.
Biotic- Any living thing in an ecosystem.
Abiotic – Any nonliving thing in an ecosystem.
Community- All the organisms living together in a particular ecosystem.
Decomposer- A living thing, such as fungus and bacteria, that breaks down the remains
of dead organisms (worms helping breakdown the soil, mushrooms, and bacteria).
Carnivore- A consumer that eats only other animals. (Examples: owls, lion, eagles)
Herbivore- A consumer that eats only plants or other producers. Examples: Deer, sheep,
insects
Omnivore- A consumer that eats both plants and animals.
Population- A group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific geographical
area.
Parasite- The relationship between 2 organisms in which 1 organism lives on or in the
other, feed upon it and usually harms it. Examples: Tick living on a dog, lice on a humans
hair, a leach on persons skin
Producer- An organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis. Examples:
plants, flowers
Food Web- The overlapping food chains that link producers, consumers and
decomposers in an ecosystem.

1. Lady Bug Activity: Know the main purpose of the ladybug/ant activity.
2. Know the steps for finding out how many bugs are in an area:
Step 1: section into equal squares
Step 2: choose number of squares
Step 3: count insects in squares
Step 4: divide then by the number of squares you choose
Step 5: Multiply by the total number of squares
Example
How would you estimate the number of insects in a 6 X 6 foot flower bed?
Step 1: Section the flower bed off into 36 squares (6X6 =36 squares)
Step 2: Choose three random squares (you can choose any number you want)
Step 3: Count the insects in the squares you choose.
Step 4: Divide by three (because that is the number of squares chosen).
Step 5: Multiply by 36 which is the TOTAL number of squares.
3. Know example so Prey and Predator (lynx hunting a hare, polar bear catching a seal,
lions chasing a zebra).
4. Know what would happen if the sun was blocked from Earth for an extended period of
time. Would thing die or be normal?
5. Know that ecosystems are always changing.
6. Know chlorophyll gives plants their green color
7. Know what you can find in an owl pellet (Examples: Fur and bones).
