The first explorer and pathfinder of the western territories.
He discovered the warriors path that led through the Appalachian mountains
into Kentucky
Thousands of buffalo and rich farm land
He built the Wilderness Road that allowed pioneers to move into western
territories.
Pioneer families had to become self-sufficient because they were living in
the wilderness. They had to clear the forests in order have farm fields. The
trees they cut were used to build their homes. If they needed anything they
would have to make it themselves.
President Thomas Jefferson and the United States bought the Louisiana
territory from France for 15 million dollars.

The belief that the United States borders should stretch from the Atlantic
Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
Many people believed that it was the right of the United States to take over
the land. It made it easier for people to act unfairly. More people wanted to
move west because they thought it was their right.
A trail pioneers took from Missouri to Oregon.
The pioneers were looking for good free farm land. The trail was the safest
way to travel over the mountains. It was a very difficult trip and many
people died along the way.
Gold was discovered in California in 1848. During the next year thousands
of people moved to California looking to get rich
300,000 people moved west, and California soon became a state
